Divio Introduces All-In-One Chip For Solid-State Camcorders

Divio Inc., Sunnyvale, Calif., USA, introduced the NW901, a single-chip CODEC (Compression/Decompression) that enables manufacturers to design solid-state camcorders that combine 30 frames per second, MPEG-4 video, high fidelity AAC 2-channel audio, and up to 4-megapixel digital still camera functionality, the company said. The NW901 offers camera-specific features and was designed for camera manufacturers to develop a new class of all-in-one solid-state camcorders. A solid-state camcorder utilizes solid-state flash memory cards to store video, audio and still images. Flash memory storage replaces tape-based mechanical systems of traditional camcorders, allowing them to be smaller, more portable and cost-effective, Divio said.

"We believe solid-state, Flash-based camcorders represent a significant new consumer market for flash memory storage," said Wes Brewer, director of Business Development at SanDisk Corp., which has invested in Divio.
