Canon's New Ivy Mini Photo Printer Lets You Share Your Memories In Real Life

Canon is releasing its first 2x3 printer today. It's the smallest and lightest printer canon has ever made. In case you're unaware, 2x3 has led a renaissance in Polaroid and Fuji Instax cameras and film over the past few years and quite a few electronic manufacturers have tried making portable printers to capitalize on their popularity.

Canon's Ivy isn't the first 2x3 printer to come to market, but it is the first one from Canon, which is a big deal. They're really pushing the live in the moment and not online angle of the benefits of a physical printer. In fact, they're pushing that angle so much that they use it IRL almost any time they talk about the unique attributes of the printer.

Speaking of those, this tiny little printer looks sophisticated and comes in three colors. White and Rose Gold, White and Mint Green and White and Slate grey. I mean it's still a printer, but it's sharp enough that you could leave it out on the counter and it doesn't look bad.

The Ivy connects to your phone via Bluetooth and can instantly print images of your life or business that you'd normally upload to social media. Well, it can print any images on your phone, but its main purpose is to share and have those memories available physically IRL to enjoy and not just through an electronic screen.

The Canon Mini Printer App includes creative filters, stickers and augmented reality face distortion. It's basically like using snap chat or Instagram and then printing from them. I'm guessing most people will just print the already edited photos that they previously uploaded to social media, but it's nice to know you can add text and draw on an image before you print it just in case you didn't already own forty apps that already did that. That's a little snark there, but only because this marketing seems like it came from a focus group of old people who were trying to "get into the minds of young girls".

There are some really cool aspects of the printer though that shouldn't be overlooked. The Ivy uses ZINK Zero Ink which allows printing in color without the need for color ink cartridges. It can print stickers just as easily as it can print pictures and they're both smudge free and water resistant, which is a huge selling point. A lot of the 2x3 printers out there smear like a melted painting when they come into contact with the tiniest bit of moisture. It's also nice that it's an edgeless image and doesn't have the white border of instant film, it gives the images a more refined look.

Another really fun thing this printer can do with the printer and the App is print collages and also do tile prints made out of four or nine printed images. That's a cool feature to have if you're hanging out with some friends or on a work-shoot and took an image you loved and wanted to make a larger version of it without the need of having a larger printer.

This is a fun little printer that does a lot for not a lot of money. The Canon IVY Mini Photo Printer is available right now for $129.99, which comes with a starter pack of ten sheets of photo paper. You can also buy twenty and fifty-sheet packs of photo paper for $9.99 and $24.99, respectively.

Here's the color line up of Rose Gold, Mint Green and Slate Grey with the full press release below.
