Canon Unveils New MPEG-2 Full HD Video Codec

Today, Canon announced their adoption of a MPEG-2 Full HD recording codec for an unnamed professional video camera in the works.  The new codec will allow for up to 50 Mbps data recording and double the color data of the HDV*1 profile format.

The MPEG-2 Full HD compression allows for recording at 1,920 x 1,080-pixel full high-definition video and doubles the color resolution of the previous format used in HDV.  It also doubles the data volume of HDV (upt to 50 Mbps).

The format of the video is the indsutry standard MXF (Material eXchange Format).  Canon is working with in conjunction with Apple, Adobe, Avid Tech. and Grass Valley to ensure compatibility for editing packages.
