Canon has announced the second entry in its EOS R lineup. The new EOS RP is designed to serve as an entry-level full-frame mirrorless camera for amateur and advanced amateur photographers. And we've already gotten our hands on one!

"As Canon continues to evolve its full-frame mirrorless cameras, our goal is that one day the EOS R line becomes as widely popular as our celebrated lineup of EOS DSLR cameras," said Kazuto Ogawa, president and chief operating officer, Canon U.S.A., Inc. "As a company, we believe that in order for us to accomplish that goal, Canon needs to develop full-frame mirrorless cameras for every skill level of photographers and that starts with amateurs and advanced amateurs. This makes the EOS RP the perfect addition to the existing lineup."

Marked by a super-compact and ultra-lightweight design, the Canon EOS RP weighs just 17.29 ounces and measures about 5-inches (w) x 3.77-inches (h) x 2.36-inches (d). Under the hood, the camera features a 26.1 megapixel CMOS sensor powered by Canon's DIGIC 8 image processor. In addition, the device offers Dual Pixel CMOS Auto Focus (AF) with 4,779 manually selectable AF points, along with an eye detection AF function capable of automatically detecting faces and then focusing on a subject's eye.

And though designed to take advantage of Canon's new RF lenses, the camera is also compatible with the company's EF and EF-S lenses via an optional RF EOS-R Mount Adapter. Finally, a Visual Guide mode is implemented to help customers capture certain types of images, enabling users to see on screen how different modes and settings can affect their photos and videos.

Here's a full rundown of additional EOS RP features per Canon:
  • Built-in 0.39 inch, 2.36 million dot Electronic Viewfinder with Touch-and-Drag AF
  • Vari-Angle LCD touchscreen
  • 4K UHD 24P/Full HD 60p video recording with 4K time-lapse shooting and the ability to extract still images from 4K video recordings
  • ISO range of 100-25,600 that is expandable up to ISO of 102,400
  • Built-in Wi-Fi┬«  and Bluetooth┬«  technology
  • Mobile RAW workflow supported paired with Digital Photo Professional Express App

The Canon EOS RP is set to start shipping in March 2019 for an estimated retail price of $1299 for the body only. A body-and-lens kit bundled with an RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM will also be available for $2399.
