Canon EOS R Firmware Adding Eye Tracking AF to Servo Mode!

Thumbnail image for canonEOSRSale.jpgCanon has announced plans to release an Eye Tracking AF firmware update for its EOS R mirrorless digital camera. An exact release date has not been announced yet, but the upgrade is expected to arrive in the first half of 2019.

With the updated Eye Tracking AF feature, the EOS R will be able to automatically detect faces and then focus on a subject's eye. Previously, EOS R eye detection was limited to one-shot AF -- but with the new firmware, Eye Tracking will be supported in servo AF mode during continuous shooting for taking multiple shots of a moving subject, and movie servo AF mode for video recording.

The feature is also set to be available on Canon's upcoming EOS RP camera, and should help place both Canon models more in line with Sony's competing EyeAF technology.

The Canon EOS R is now available for an MSRP of $2,299.
