Canon USA Announces the EOS M3 Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Camera and 3 new EF-M Mount Lenses for the US Market

canon_m3_front.jpegCanon USA has announced that the EOS M3 Digital Camera, and 3 new EF-M Mount Lenses are coming to the US Market, after Canon started selling the M3 in other markets earlier this year. These should be available in October 2015, more than 2 years after the launch of the EOS M Camera and EF-M Lens mount. These are welcome additions to the Canon EOS Family, since many photographers appreciate having a compact system camera with DSLR Image Quality, thanks to the use of APS-C Size Imaging Sensors in a smaller mirrorless camera body.

In July 2013, after Panasonic, Olympus, Sony and Fujifilm had launched mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras and lenses; Canon jumped on board the mirrorless trend and announced the EOS M Camera and the EF-M Lens Mount, with an EF-M 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM and EF-M 22mm f/2 STM "pancake" Lenses.

Canon considers the EOS M to be part of the EOS System, and they also launched an optional EF to EF-M Lens adapter that allows any of Canon's EF and EF-S SLR Lenses to be used with the EOS M Series Cameras.

The original EOS M Camera included an 18MP APS-C Hybrid CMOS Sensor with Continuous Autofocus in Movie Mode with Subject Tracking, and also included a standard EOS hot shoe for an external flash. See Steve's Canon EOS M Review for more information about it and the EOS M System.

Now, two years later, Canon is announcing that they're launching a new EOS M3 Camera with an upgraded 24.2 Megapixel APS-C size CMOS Sensor that is coupled to a more advanced DIGIC 6 image processor, with what they're sayings is "super-fast" Autofocus that is up to 6.1 times faster than the AF System in the original EOS M, thanks to the use of a new 49-point Hybrid CMOS Image Sensor configuration.

Like the EOS M, the EOS M3 will include top and back controls for frequently used features, as well as a touchscreen for focusing, shooting, viewing of images and navigation of menus. But, unlike the touchscreen the EOS M uses, the new EOS M3 touchscreen with be able to tilt 180 degrees up and 45 degrees down, allowing easier focusing and shooting of still images and videos. The EOS M3 also includes WiFi and NFC. Note the new touchscreen in this photo showing the white version of the EOS M3, since Canon will be launching the new EOS M3 and Lenses in both black and white colors.

canon_m3_back.jpegThe new Canon M3 should be available to US customers in October 2015, with a estimated retail price of $679.99. An EOS M3 EF-M 18-55mm IS STM lens kit will be available in the customer's choice of black or white for an estimated retail price of $799.99. Additionally, a two lens kit featuring the EOS M3 digital camera with the EF-M 18-55mm IS STM lens and the EF-M 55-200mm IS STM lens will be available for an estimated retail price of $1,049.00.

Canon is also launching 3 new EF-M Mount Lenses for use with the original EOS M, or new EOS M3 Cameras: the EF-M 11-22mm f/4-5.6 IS STM wide-angle zoom lens for an estimated retail price of $399.99, the EF-M 22mm f/2 STM compact prime lens in silver for an estimated retail price of $249.99, and the EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM telephoto zoom lens for an estimated retail price of $349.99
