Canon 5D Mark IIs Destroyed to Make Iron Man 2
While most scenes in the movie were handled by traditional cameras, the crew used Canon 5D Mark IIs to get footage for the big race in Monaco. "We mounted the Canon cameras on all four sides of the vehicle to get background plates for Tony Stark driving on the race track, " explains cinematographer Matthew Libatique.
"There is no other camera that can really get into some of the tight spots that the Canon 5D Mark II can, and with the ease that it can," says Libatique. That applies especially to the crash sequences.
For the big crash in which Tony Stark's car goes flying into the air, a 5D was mounted to the front of the car. "It's probably the most impressive shot in that sequence," says Libatique, "and it was captured by a 5D Mark II camera."
