Canon Debuts Two New RF Mount Lenses

Two new Canon RF lenses have been revealed. The lineup includes the RF15-35mm F2.8 L IS USM and the RF24-70mm F2.8 L IS USM. Both lenses are set to launch in late September for an estimated retail price of $2,299 each. And in addition to the new lenses, the company also announced details on an upcoming free firmware update for the EOS R system.

"As the emergence of mirrorless cameras continue accelerating the market and with Canon’s deeply rooted heritage in optics, we are excited to expand the lens offerings and acquiesce the needs of EOS R users," said Kazuto Ogawa, president and chief operating officer, Canon U.S.A., Inc. "The technical improvements and features within these new RF lenses are needed to drive the market forward."

The free EOS R Firmware Update is set for release in late September. The update will offer improvements for Eye detection AF, AF frame display delay, and Subject identification.

RF15-35mm F2.8 L IS USM

The RF15-35mm F2.8 L IS USM is a wide zoom lens geared toward landscape, architecture, nature, sports, and portrait photography. The unit supports IS for full-frame with a CIPA standard of five stops and offers a drip and dust resistant design. In addition, the device features an optical construction consisting of 16 elements in 12 groups, including 3 Aspherical lenses and 2 UD lenses. Finally, 9 circular aperture blades are implemented as well.

RF 24-70mm F2.8 L IS USM

The RF24-70mm F2.8 L IS USM is an RF Mount zoom lens geared toward a variety of applications, including street photography and movie shooting. The lens features a portable design, IS, and a high speed and high precision Nano USM motor for quiet focus performance. Likewise, the device offers focus breathing suppression, a sensitivity setting during MF, and an adjustable focus ring. The unit's optical construction consists of 21 elements in 15 groups, including 3 Aspherical lenses and 3 UD lenses. Finally, 9 circular aperture blades are implemented as well.

And beyond the two lenses detailed above, Canon is also prepping an RF70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM model for release in the second half of 2019. Pricing has not been announced yet.
