Beware Counterfeit SanDisk Memory Cards

Counterfeit-SanDisk.jpgWe've all heard the stories of counterfeit camera gear, and some of us have even made some very unwise purchases of things that seemed like very good deals until we tried to use them. Knockoff cameras, lenses and other gear are fairly common, but an even more frequent occurrence seems to be the counterfeit memory card.

A reader tipped off the guys at The Online Photographer to an interesting statistic. Apparently, around a third of all SanDisk memory cards on the market are fakes. They look like SanDisk cards and they're sold as SanDisk cards, but they're impostors.

That's a huge chunk of the market, and should come as an alarming statistic to anyone buying cards, especially if you're buying from less than reputable dealers. Photo shops should be fine and certainly places like Best Buy have legitimate products, but if you're buying on eBay or from a dealer with suspiciously low prices you may want to rethink your purchase.
