Apple changed the world with the original iPhone. It was a revolution that's been copied and imitated ever since. Large corporations are constantly vying to supplant Apple as the world's premier smartphone maker, but even its close competitors copy them. Look at the notch at the top of the iPhone X, almost all new top of the line Android cameras have them now if imitation is the best form of flattery, then Apple should get ready to be flattered all over the world.

Today Apple announced three brand new iPhones. The iPhone Xs the Xs Max and the Xr.

As you can see from this photo below the Xs has a more compact body than the iPhone 8 Plus and yet it has a larger screen. The Xs Max, on the other hand, has almost the same footprint as the iPhone Plus but has a screen that's over 30% larger. The Xs has a 5.8 inch screen, the Xr a 6.1 inch screen and the Xs Max a whopping 6.5 inch screen.

The Xs and Xs Max come in Gold, Silver and Space Grey, and have newer tougher glass on the screen, which Apple claims is the toughest glass they've ever used on a phone. They're also rated IP68 which means it can be submerged in water or liquid up to 2 meters for up to 8 minutes without suffering any kind of damage.

It has a brand new A12 Bionic chip which is the first 7-nanometer chip in a phone. That A12 Chip has 6.9 billion transistors and a 4 core GPU and a 6 Core CPU. The Xs and Xs Max can also be upgraded with up to 512MB of internal storage. Its core ML is up to 9X faster than the previous model and only uses 1/10th the power which will speed up your apps while conserving electricity. They also added Dual SIM support, actual two SIM cards for China and a new eSIM technology for the rest of the work to allow you to have to phone numbers or two international plans. This is a game changer.

But what about the cameras? Apple may have changed the game again with the new iPhone X series of cameras. It re-imagines what's possible on a smartphone.

The iPhone Xs and Xs Max have three cameras in total. Two in the back like the original iPhone X. One of them is a brand new 12MP wide angle with an entirely new sensor. There's a 12MP telephoto as well which has image stabilization and the front side camera is now 7MP on a new sensor and is twice as fast as the previous generation.

Apple did a lot more with software this time around to create better photos. They have a new HDR which they call Smart HDR. It has 60 percent dynamic range.

They also added:

  • Bokeh and Depth Control
  • Enhanced Portrait mode selfies
  • Sharper action shots
  • 4K video and wider stereo playback
    • Extended Dynamic range in videos up to 30fps.

The Bokeh control is something everyone kind of new that Apple was doing as the Bokeh they were getting in portrait mode was mostly an algorithm that blurred the background. But now that Algorithm is much improved and you can even have control over how much blur you want by choosing the F-stop that the image was taken with... after it was already taken.

The iPhone Xr has the same A12 processor and most of the same internal features, but it only has a single camera.

It's the same new 12MP wide angle that's on the back of the Xs and Xs Max and they've even been able to add portrait mode to the Xr. It's not going to be as dramatic as the Xs or Xs Max and you won't have bokeh control because it's algorithm based only and doesn't have the extra telephoto to pull data from. This photo below shows how their software isolates the person in the foreground to distort the image around them.

The Xr also forgoes the OLED screen for what Apple is calling Liquid Retina. It's an LCD screen which is much cheaper to make than the OLED which makes the phone cheaper. This cheaper phone will be available in up to 6 different colors.

Apple is really making a push with AR as well. The cameras one the Xs and Xs max combined with the A12 processor allow it to do some pretty incredible things. Live tracking and simulations are really powerful. They even did a trick where they took an image of a Rocket Espresso machine from a website and then used AR to see what that Espresso would look like on the counter of a home. That's insane.

What's really interesting about these new phones and their new screens and cameras are not the separate parts, but how Apple is using them all together.  It's getting results from a handheld device that would've taken at least four separate items to get before.

This is truly revolutionary. Wait until the developers get their hands on these, I bet we're going to see some truly mind-blowing things.

The new Apple iPhone Xr will be available to pre-order on October 19th and begins shipping on the 26th starting at $749 for the base model.

The new Apple iPhone Xs and Xs Max are available to pre-order on Septenber 14th and begin shipping on September 26th. The Xs starts at $999 and the Xs Max at $1099.
