The Best of Adobe Max 2017 - Lightroom, Illustrator, XD, Dimension, Photoshop, & More!

Adobe Max logo.png

More than 12,000 people attended the Adobe MAX event in Vegas on October 18th where they were treated to a lot of super boring speeches before they showed anything cool. Why can't they just thank everyone for coming, say something short about the industry and get to how they're going to help advance it, then dazzle us.

CEO Shantanu Narayen said "Today marks the biggest release of new products in creative cloud since we first launched it five years ago"

And he wasn't kidding either. Aside from the updates to popular programs, they announced three brand new products!

First and foremost, Adobe Lightroom CC is looking pretty slick. Ever since Apple stopped making and supporting Aperture, Lightroom has rested on its laurels a bit. Why innovate when you're kind of the only choice for professionals?

LIGHTROOM

Today though they've announced some pretty big changes to Lightroom. First and foremost it's now called Lightroom CC and it can be entirely cloud-based. You can work on a project on your phone, tablet or even a neighbors computer. As long as you're connected to the internet you can get to your work if you desire. But how does the regular program function?  F-Stoppers got a hold of a pre-release and here are their thoughts:

Switching to the Develop module on a fully loaded mid-2015 Retina MacBook Pro took ten seconds for a relatively standard 24-megapixel image in the Lightroom version we were all using yesterday. The pre-release Lightroom Classic CC I recently installed loaded the same image and was ready to accept edits in a fraction of a second (the first time it loaded, it took two seconds. But upon every subsequent load with previously non-loaded images, it was lightning fast...just had to warm up).

An export of 19 24-megapixel images, each with minor adjustments from the Basic, HSL, and Camera Calibration areas took 2'45" in the now-old Lightroom CC. The new Lightroom Classic CC did the same export in exactly a minute less time.

Brushes flow smoothly and no longer stutter or take forever to load and show their effects.

Preview images seemed to load faster, too.

Of course, none of this could ever be fast enough to satisfy our ever-increasing need for instant gratification. The hesitations I alluded to before are for a mere second or two while something loads for the first time. As I created ten brushes and scribbled around a bit in each one, all as fast as I could, yes, there were some signs of lagging until I paused for a mere second or two. And on occasion, I would get a small flicker of an image when switching between images in a module and waiting a mere second or two for it to resolve. But focusing on all of these "issues" would miss the point completely. Lightroom is an absolute pleasure to use for the first time in years.

Availability, Plans and Pricing

The all-new Lightroom CC is available across three photography plans:

For photographers that want an all-in-one plan that offers the full benefits of the Lightroom CC service plus the transformative power of Photoshop, the Creative Cloud Photography plan with 1 TB includes Lightroom CC, Lightroom for mobile and web, Photoshop CC, Adobe Spark with premium features, Adobe Portfolio, and 1 TB of cloud storage ($19.99/month, but available at $14.99/month for the first year for existing Creative Cloud Photography customers).

Lightroom CC has also been added to the existing Creative Cloud Photography plan with an additional 20 GB of storage to help users get started on the new service. This plan remains at $9.99/month and includes Lightroom CC, Lightroom for mobile and web, Lightroom Classic, Photoshop CC, Adobe Spark with premium features, Adobe Portfolio, and 20 GB of cloud storage.

Creative Cloud All Apps members also have access to the new Lightroom CC service.

The all-new Lightroom CC plan addresses the needs of photographers who want a cloud-based photography service for editing, organizing, storing and sharing their photos from wherever they are, and includes Lightroom CC, Lightroom for mobile and web, Adobe Spark with premium features, Adobe Portfolio, and 1 TB of cloud storage ($9.99/month).

For those who are truly mobile and don't require a desktop photography solution, the Lightroom Mobile plan for iOS and Android is available with 100 GB ($4.99/month).

ADOBE ILLUSTRATOR

Essentials workspace - one window updates and changes with relevant information instead of opening bubbles everywhere. This is something they should've added years ago. Forget having a dozen bubbles open for no reason, why not just have one that the information changes based on current use. Say you click on the text in an image, then the info in the bubble changes to commands needed to work on the text. Genius.

(adobe illustrator streamlined look with fewer bubbles open)

  • It starts 30 percent faster than before
  • It can sync with Capture!
  • Also more Font enhancement like COLOR FONT - Every character has a different color, they overlap. And Variable Fonts - You can change the width or weight of different fonts.
  • Puppet Warp! You can easily move animations and or arms of products, it's amazing.

ADOBE CAPTURE

New mobile app and takes any font you take a picture of and then gives you a similar font that you can update and can import directly into Illustrator and Cloud apps.

ADOBE STOCK

Adobe Stock now has 100 million videos, images and other media like Models, Materials, and Light to work with their new Adobe Dimension. They Updated their search so you can now search by dragging and dropping a picture from the stock to find others like it etc.

PHOTOSHOP

Photoshop got things like a usable repository of layers, meaning you can now have a box that holds layers you like to use and can drag and drop them with ease.

  • Drawing and Painting in Photoshop - now comes with Surface Dial support. Pen Curve tool - auto extrapolates to weird bending, easy symmetrical shape with very little effort.
  • Brushes - It's hard to find the brush you're looking for.  All brushes have previews and you can categorize them and organize them.
  • Brush Smoothing has stroke catch u[ and adjust for zoom - it cleans out the lines makes everything super smooth.

One of the biggest additions, however, is the announcement that Kyle Webster, award-winning brush designer, has joined Adobe and you now have access to all his brushes in Photoshop.

ADOBE XD

Adobe XD is out of Beta and is an all in one solution to design product and share apps, website and screen experiences.  This looks slick. Up until today you'd have to use a number of different prorgams to do all the things XD does. It quickly builds apps and web pages that are streamlined and easy to use. Early beta users claimed they could prototype an entire product in just a few hours now.

  • Experience first - easy to use
  • Built for Performance - fluid and fast
  • Crafted with the Community

ADOBE DIMENSION

Adobe also launched Adobe Dimension. This is a product that's going to change how companies prototype things. It's like having a 3D studio modeler and Photoshop mixed in one. Zorana Ghee from Adobe said: "having the power to visualize your brands in photo-realistic settings without setting up a photo shoot is magical"

So, here's an example. Below is a file of images you might get from a graphic designer for new product labels you want to try out or for protypes of a new line.

Now, instead of printing them out and having to fabricate a 3D container or bag and try and make it look professional can take hours and hours.

But with Dimension, you can create 3D models of things, pulling the items directly from Adobe Stock and add your 2D design, change the lighting and the background.
