Roxio: Sharing Your Media Library

The Roxio media suite has many different components including the Roxio Streamer. This is a helpful application, which makes it very easy to share your media library around your home network. This is one of the easiest ways of streaming your media collection around your network This makes it possible to enjoy your videos on your TV, laptop or any other connected device.

When Roxio media streamer is set up, it is then possible to select which files or folder you want to share. The computer which has Media Streamer installed will become the server where all of the media files will be delivered.

Installing Roxio Media Streamer

The first thing that you will need to do is install Roxio Media Streamer. To do this successfully, you will need to install it on a computer with a wired network connection. It is not possible to install this on a Wireless connection. You can install Media Streamer on any computer; there's no need to install it on the same computer that you have installed Creator on. It's normally desirable to choose a computer which is always switched on so that your media files will always be available whenever you want them.

To install the software, simply pop the installation CD into your computer's drive and then follow the on screen instructions. If you don't want to install this on the same computer as Creator, then simply deselect creator and only select the Media Streaming server.

Naming Your Server

Once the software has finished installing, you will then be asked to name your server. It is important to choose a good name for your server so that it is easy to find. You will also be prompted for the administrators user-name and a password. The password must always contain at least one number and one letter.

It's a good idea to write this information down somewhere because you will need to know all of this whenever you want to share files. This makes it very easy to access all of your shared media files on other networked devices.

Premium Services

There are also premium services which can be used to unlock more secrets. You don't need any credit card numbers to register for the free trial. The additional premium features include mobile phone access, support for RSS feeds and FTP access. The RSS Feeds are very useful as it makes it possible for your friends and family to stay up to date with all of your photographs. If you don't want to try the free trial then you can click the No, Thanks button and continue through the installation process.

Adding Media

When the server has been installed correctly, you will need to add media to your server. There are two shortcuts on the desktop. Double click on the "Roxio Streamer" icon on the desktop and this will open up the folder where your shared media is stored. Drag and drop the files that you want to share and put them inside this shared media folder.

Testing

Once you have added the media, try to play it back to check that it works correctly. Once you have tested the media on that computer, you should then try it on another networked PC to check it's working properly.
