Maya for Automotive Creation

Maya is one of the leading software products and can be used for automotive creation. This software produces high quality animation and can be used in conjunction with many other rendering and video editing programs. Maya is a faster and easier program to use for animation with an interface that makes animation easy for all. The toolset that has been created for modeling is production proven. All of the meshes and polygons can be previewed and rendered as a way to see the models as they are being created.


In particular, Maya is an excellent tool for creating concept vehicles. Maya can not only bring your ideas to life, but also help to create these new ideas and concepts in the first place. Use Maya to create the skeletons and frame of the vehicle or move directly to the exterior look. Maya is really only useful for these concepts as engineers will need other tools that create designs based on distances and measurements to take the concept model from the page to reality. Maya only uses a pixels and not distances. Besides exterior design, Maya can also be used for interior design.


Automobiles can be created using NURBS rather than subdivision surfaces. NURBS are a type of mathematical model that can easily create curves and other surfaces. NURBS uses control points, knots, curvature and degree elevation in order to manipulate the shape of the object. These curves are perfect for producing the curves and lines for new autos.

Dynamic Models

In order for concept cars to be further developed, they must produce an emotion from the viewer. This leads to creating dynamic models with software. Besides focusing on the vehicle model think about how it is in light. Strong silhouettes, reflections and highlights can be used to have the model pop off the screen. Backlighting and color overlays can be used to bring volume to the car.

Add definition with different texture brushes. A black airbrush can be used to help displace the direction of light. Tonal variations can also be used throughout the panel designs, as this is how the vehicle would appear in real life.  These tonal variations can be enhanced by light hitting the edges of the cars and this enhances the vehicle shape even further.

The Basic Model

Creating the basic model is one of the most important steps. Having the wheel placement is the best way to start as the placement defines the width and wheel dimensions of the vehicle. Use polygons to create the basic shape or apply the larger body curves by using NURBS. Create a side view and then start to create the model from different perspectives.  It is important to check all of the surfaces from all possible angles. Extend all the side borders to create the general body shape across the vehicle.


Once the basic shape of the car is created, all the different details can be added. This includes wheels, rims, grilles and more. These body details are added by using geometry intersections. Edges should be strengthened and smoothed. Interior objects do not require that much detail, as they will not be visible in the final rendering.
