How To Change the Photoshop Canvas Color

The Photoshop canvas is, by default, neutral grey. Normally, this serves as a great reference for your photo editing. However, if you get bored with it, you can change it.

Step 1 - Canvas color

The canvas reacts more or less like an image. So go to your color swatch and select a foreground color. Then grab your paint bucket tool which may be hidden under the gradient tool. With the paint bucket active, hold down shift and click on the canvas.

Step 2 - In CS3

If you have Photoshop CS3, then you can change the canvas color for each mode that you can view your work in. You can scroll through the different displays by hitting the "F" key.  At each setting, you can repeat step 1 to get the same or different canvas colors.

Step 3 - Returning to the default

You may have decided that you were wrong to change the canvas color and just want it to go back to the way it was before.  Open up your color picker and enter the following values: R: 204 G: 204 B: 204. Dump this color into the canvas and you should be set to go.

Changing the color of the Photoshop canvas can serve a number of purposes. Knowing that the feature exists can come in handy one day.
