Stock Photography: 6 Tips for Creating Photos Based on Concepts or Ideas
Stock photography involves creating photographs for sale online. Although stock photographs appear generic in nature, they are professionally produced and based on concepts. There are numerous sources for a concept or idea for the photographer's next shoot. It can be found anywhere and everywhere. Yet there are times when photographers will have difficulty in thinking of the next idea. Here are some tips to jog a few ideas.
1. Give it Time
There are photographers who like to cram and feel that they can produce better ideas when pressured with time. However, this will also give little time for preparation, making the concept more difficult to pull off efficiently. Allocate enough time to think of ideas, make the necessary preparations and organize the actual shoot.
Conduct at least one session wherein ideas can be listed. This can be done alone or with a group of people. Select an area where one or the entire group can be isolated from any unnecessary distractions. When brainstorming, do not scratch any ideas out, regardless of how strange or impractical it may seem. Write as much or as little detail one would like, depending on which is more effective.
3. Think of the Final Message
Brainstorming gives a general idea of what the photographer wants to do. The message is the thought or feeling that the viewer should get upon viewing the end photo. Each photograph has a message. How effective the message is put across separates a good photo from a great one.
4. Consider the Angle
This does not pertain to the camera angle but more on the angle of the specific message you wish to convey. For instance, the photographer wishes to take pictures based on the concept of tattoos. The message chosen is that tattoos identify a person's roots or background. From this point, the photographer may consider taking photographs of a particular tribe, criminals or even athletes.
5. Target a Specific Audience
Although great photographs can be understood regardless of the age of the viewer, most photographs have a specified target audience. There are also concepts which cannot be targeted to certain audiences. For instance, using the same example previously mentioned, there are some religious which see tattoos as a taboo. If the photographer decides to take photos of tattoos on athletes, one may choose basketball fans as the target audience.
6. Compose the Image
This is where the photographer considers the other artistic
aspects such as the camera angle, the type of lighting that will be
used, color palettes, the venue and so on. The type of audience will
affect what images will be more effective. For instance, younger
audiences will appreciate edgy or creative imagery while older viewers
may value softer or more elegant images.
A picture is said to be worth a thousand words. Whenever picture is being taken, think of the various elements using the tips previously mentioned. The end image should reflect the concept. It will take some time and preparation, necessary to making the shoot successful.
