Photographing Babies Milestones
Photographing babies in their first couple of years is always an exciting and rewarding experience, as it allows you to document and measure how much your baby has grown and developed in that time. There are so many important milestones that will take place in the first couple of years of a child's life. As a general rule, baby photography in the first 6 or 7 months is best done inside a professional studio, while on-location photo shoots are more common once a child is able to sit up unassisted.
Newborn photo sessions can often be tricky, as newborns are particularly prone to crankiness and are often not interested in cooperating with the demands of a photo shoot. Still, newborn photography can be a an extremely rewarding experience and will undoubtedly be appreciated by parents for years after their child has grown up. The trick with newborn photography is to try and catch your subject when he is slightly sleepy. Ask the parents when their child's normal nap times are and try to take photos around these times.
During a Baby's First 3 Months
A newborn baby changes so dramatically over his first three months that there are a number of photo-worthy milestones that will arise during the first 3 months of life. Some parents will want to have all of these milestones photographed carefully, while others will opt only to photograph the "BIG" milestones, which will undoubtedly vary from couple to couple. During the first 3 months of a child's life, for instance, babies learn to lift their heads unassisted. There are a number of different poses that can be used to capture this important moment in a child's development.
Infants also learn to use their hands to grasp and hold objects during their first 3 months. This will provide numerous photo opportunities. Perhaps the biggest milestone that will typically occur in an infant's first three months is its first smile. Smiling children are undeniably adorable, and many parents will want to document the time when their baby first begins to show off his smile. Have toys on hand to help coax a smile out of your subjects.
Between 3 and 6 Months
As a child continues to develop, more milestones begin to develop. As mentioned above, sometime in the first 6 months, a child will usually learn to sit upright without assistance, which is a photo-worthy milestone. A child's first baby tooth will also be a great opportunity to snap a few photos. Babies feeding during this period can also provide cute pictures, as children move from their bottle to trying different types of soft foods--often with hilarious results.
A child's first birthday is an always-popular time to revisit the studio for a photo session, marking the growth and development of an infant. At the end of a year, a child will have shown remarkable growth and features will have changed significantly since a child's newborn photos. It is sometimes fun to position a child with the same props that were used during the initial newborn photo session in order to provide context to just how much the child has grown in a year.
