How to Create Aerial Photogrammetry

Aerial photogrammetry is a useful way of capturing a birds eye view of various things. Creating areal photographs can be challenging because it is so different to other types of photography. You will have to find a way of getting your camera in the sky while also being able to take great photos. Overcoming these challenges is certainly worthwhile, because it can produce some excellent results which are useful for all sorts of situations.

Aerial photos are used to see how the land lies, for planning applications and just to see things from a different perspective. Aerial photographs are enticing because they are quite difficult to capture. People also love the opportunity to see somewhere that they are used to from a different perspective.

Step 1: Getting Your Camera off the Ground

The first hing that you need to do is find a way of getting your camera into the sky. There are a few different ways that you can fly with your camera. The normal options are to use a helicopter or aeroplane. Planes are generally cheaper to rent and easier to find. They also glide, which should minimize the vibrations. When photographing in a plane or helicopter, you can fly with your camera which makes it easy to take photos.

It is also possible to make your own photography rig which is more affordable to fly. You could mount a camera onto a remote controlled helicopter or even onto a kite. When doing this, you will need to be much more creative with how you trigger your camera. Choosing a camera which has a remote controlled trigger will make this easier.

Most people will choose to use a digital camera although the same principle can also be used for 35mm film cameras.

Step 2: Dealing with Vibrations

One of the biggest problems with aerial photography is the problems caused by vibrations. When you are photographing on the ground, you can minimize vibrations by mounting on a tripod. However, when you are flying in the sky, this is much more difficult. Most photographers will simply try their best to avoid suffering from vibrations. However, there are also systems which can be used to minimize the vibrations. These include gyroscopes which will keep the camera completely level no matter what the plane is doing. However, any vibrations could still cause problems.

Step 3: Downloading Your Photos

Once you have captured your photos, you will then need to either develop them or load them onto your computer. To do this, you will first need to land your camera safely and then connect it to your computer. Once you have done this, it should then be possible to transfer them to your computer. Save them somewhere safely so that you can edit them.

Step 4: Editing Photos

When the photos are loaded onto your computer, they can then be edited using whichever application you normally use. Elements can be removed and the whole photo can be touched up easily. The same techniques used for landscapes can normally be applied to aerial photography.

Step 5: Printing Photos

With the photo complete, you can then print them out if you want or upload them to the Internet.
