Getting Great Pet Photos: To Treat or Not To Treat?

Working with animals and taking pet photos can be difficult at the best of times. Getting animals to do exactly what you want can be very difficult because it can be difficult to communicate with them. One option is to use pet treats to encourage your pets to do what you want. But is it really a good idea to use pet treats to take great pet photos?

Health

When giving dogs treats it's important to consider their health. Some dog treats are unhealthy and these can be bad for their health. If you are giving treats for pet photos then you should consider using healthy natural treats. These are much better for the pets.

If you do decide to use treats then it's always a good idea to ask the owners if it's okay. Some owners might not be keen on using treats while others won't mind. The owner might also be able to bring in the dogs favorite toy or treats to keep their attention for longer.

Looking the Right Way

Waving a treat or the dogs favorite toy around can get the dog's attention and get him looking in the right direction. This can make taking a photo when the pet is looking at you much easier. Use a treat or a toy of a reasonable size so that the dog will be able to see it from a distance. You might also find it beneficial to have the owner behind the camera with the treat so that they know it's for them.

Staying Still

One of the biggest problems with using treats to get the dog looking in the right direction is that they may be encouraged to get up and run towards the treat. This certainly won't result in a good photo because the dog will be moving much too quickly to capture anything. Whether using treats to gain eye contact with a dog will work will normally depend on the temperament and patience of your dog.

Rewards

Another way of using pet treats is as a reward for doing something right. If your dog sits still and is well behaved for the photo shoot then reward them with a treat. They should soon start to connect behaving well with getting a treat. This will make them much easier to work with in the future.

Patience

Working with animals is enough to try anybody's patience but it's important to keep your cool. If you start to get annoyed and start shouting at dogs then this doesn't only make you look unprofessional but it will also have a negative effect. Dogs are actually quite intelligent and will quickly get the idea that you want them to stay in one place for their photos.

Using treats can be a great way to encourage a dog or other pet to cooperate with you. This doesn't mean that you should rely on them too much though. You should also have a selection of dog toys on hand to keep dogs interested and entertained. Generally speaking though treats are a great way to take fantastic pet photos with ease.
