3 Tips for Children Photography

Children photography is a very challenging assignment even for veteran professionals. That is because no matter how much experience you have in the field already, no two children can be photographed the same. Kids are known for having very outgoing personalities, and they can get quite temperamental if the timing is not right. Here are some tips to make sure that your next children photography session is a successful one.

1. Prepare Yourself

More than prepping your subject, you as the photographer should be prepared for possibly frustrating scenarios. You might be pressed for time, be faced with a fussy toddler, have a kid that doesn’t listen, etc. These scenarios can test your patience. Just smile, expect the worst, and hope for the best.

2. Choose the Right Location

Your setting will play a big role both in the outcome of your photograph and the session itself. You have to pick a place that you know the subject will be comfortable in. Choose a playground, the family’s living room, or even the child’s favorite park.

3. Involve the Children

One way to get on a child’s good side is to involve him. Children, especially toddlers, will rarely sit still. If you force them, you might end up with an empty frame or a crying child. To start off on the right foot, you might want to entertain the child first with a toy or a little game. Engage the child, and try to get a few smiles or laughter.
