How to Replace a Broken Zoom Ring on a Digital Camera

A zoom ring is the old fashioned way of adjusting the zoom of a lens. This is a mechanical ring which is turned to extend or retract the lens. Although this is only normally found on DSLR cameras, it is sometimes found on other cameras. Certain mid range cameras, which look similar to SLR cameras but have fixed lenses, often also have a zoom ring.

This is not the same as a compact digital cmaera, which uses a telephoto switch to adjust the zoom. As the zoom ring is mechanical, there are plenty of things which can go wrong with it. Replacing a broken zoom ring on your digital camera is actually fairly easy.

Step 1: Inspecting the Zoom Ring

The first thing you need to do is take a look at the zoom ring itself. Determine exactly why it isn't working. Sometimes the rubber grip around the outside of the zoom ring will move and prevent the lens from adjusting when the zoom ring is turned. If this is the case, then the grip simply needs to be secured in place again.

If you have a true DSLR camera which features removable lenses, then you will need to focus on finding a replacement for your lens. On the other hand, if you're using a mid range camera, then you will need to find a replacement ring for your camera.

Step 2: Removing the Zoom Ring

Remove the old zoom ring from the camera by carefully dismantling the whole thing. Once the zoom lens has come away, set it aside in case you need it later.

Step 3: Replacement

Now the replacement zoom ring can be fitted in position and the camera can be reassembled.
