High speed photography involves freezing moments which occur too quickly to be appreciated by human sight or recorded by regular point and shoot cameras. High speed photographs have several uses for different fields. Scientists use these types of photographs to study movement and measure the effects of gravity. The military uses these types of images to determine whether a specific weapon is indeed accurate in taking hitting the specified target. Another use is to record the events which occur during a nuclear explosion. Sports photographers commonly use high speed photography to capture sporting events, such as horse or car racing. Photography magazines and art galleries also display some artworks produced using this type of photography.
Tools for Capturing High Speed Photographs
There are a number of types of equipment necessary for capturing images at high speeds. For one, the camera must have a manual feature. This allows the photographer to lock the image prior to taking the final shot. With autofocus or point and shoot cameras, the camera will attempt to refocus whenever there is insufficient light available. The camera must also be capable of recording at long exposures.
A flash device is needed to provide a short burst of light, bright enough for the image to be captured. Last is the flash trigger. This makes it easier for the photographer to activate the flash at the right moment. Types of triggers include light, sound and movement.
