PhotoFixLens: Fixing Barrel and Pincushion Distortion
PhotFixLens is a plug-in that corrects all types of barrel and pincushion distortions in digital images. The software can be used as a plug-in with Photoshop, Corel PhotoPaint, Lightroom and Elements.
Barrel distortion give an outwardly curving appearance to the image and the whole picture seems to be having a spherical shape rather than straight edges. This problem is mainly encountered while using a wide angle lens. The distortion is seen more in shots of structures and interiors.
In Pincushion distortion, the image tends to bend inwards and seems to have a pinched effect converging in the center. Although this distortion is harder to notice than the barrel distortion, it still affects the quality of the image. This problem occurs while using a telephoto lens at higher magnifications.
PhotFixLens offers a simple interface to correct both these distortions. Open your image in PhotFixLens and from the vertical menu on the far left click on FixLens. You will see your image in the right panel covered with a grid which gives you an idea of the level of distortion. Click on the FixLens tab, and you will find several slider controls under the Adjust Before and Adjust After tabs to fix the distortions.
As you adjust the slider controls, you can see the effect taking place in the image. You can undo all the adjustments by clicking the Reset button. If you are satisfied with the corrections, you can click the Save button to save the corrections.
