Although Xara is a very powerful image editing suite, it's surprisingly simple to use. It is possible to create a 3D pie charts with just a few minutes work. This tutorial will guide you through the process of making your own three dimensional pie chart.

Step 1: Opening Xara

The first thing that you will need to do is open up Xara Xtreme by selecting it from the start menu. Then, when prompted, start a new blank document.

Step 2: Drawing a Circle

With a blank canvas displayed on the screen, you then need to draw a circle. Select the circle tool from the tools palette and draw a circle. The color will form the color of your pie chart, so this is up to you. Make sure that it is filled with a solid color, though, so that it's easy to see.

Step 3: Cutting the Circle

Now, select the line tool and draw two lines on your circle in an L shape. This should make it look like you have removed a section of the pie. It does not really matter where these go, as it will depend on your own figures.

Step 4: Joining Shapes

Select both of the lines at the same time by clicking on one, holding down control and selecting the other. Then, right click the lines and select "Arrange Join Shapes". This will link the lines together so that they can be moved easily.

When you have done this, click on the circle and send it to the back layer. Press Control and B to do this quickly. This will make sure that the lines are on the top.

Step 5: Cutting

Select the lines and the circle together, and then click on Arrange, Combine Shapes, Subtract Shapes. This will cut the section out. Then, you need to select Arrange, Break Shapes from the menu at the top of the screen. As soon as you click the break shapes entry on the menu, the pie chart will be separated.

Step 6: Three Dimensions

Once your pie chart is cut up, you can then make it 3D. This is very easy to do and is simply a matter of clicking the small 3D button in the toolbar.

Step 7: Adding Text

Now you can add text on top of your pie chart with the exact percentages if you like. Xara makes it very simple to make these pie charts. While they might not be completely accurate, they can serve a purpose of demonstrating your facts in a way which is very easy to understand.
