How To Wrap an Image Around a Sphere in Photoshop

You may happen upon a desire to wrap an image around a sphere. Normally, you would need extra programming to make this work, but Photoshop CS3 has new features for this task.

Step 1 - Find a Panorama

Any ordinary photo will be extremely distorted when you try to convert it into a 3D shape. Aside from that, the two edges of the photo are unlikely to match up seamlessly. So the best material for this project is a panoramic photo which is already distorted inversely to a sphere and has two ends that join each other.

Step 2 - Adjust your image

Load your image into Photoshop then go to "Image" and "Image Size". Keep in mind that the 3D tool is going to stretch your image so that it is a perfect sphere. Try to crop the height so that it is close to 1/2 the length of the width without losing elements in the panorama.

Step 3 - Making a sphere

Now go to the new menu drop-down called "3D". Select "New Shape from Layer" and choose "Spherical Panorama". Your panorama will now become a 3D space with the photo surrounding the viewer.

Converting a 2D image into a 3D sphere is a highly mathematical task. Luckily, Photoshop is now programmed to do it for you.
