How To Create Focal Points in Photoshop

A focal point is something that can add a lot of depth and really make a picture pop. It is something that is used to help create a more dramatic effect on any picture that you may have. While there are some cameras that allow for you to do this during the shot, it is always much easier to do this in Photoshop after the fact. That is, if you are aware of the necessary steps that you will need to take in order to get the job done correctly.

Materials Needed

  • Photoshop Program
  • Computer

Step 1: Choose Picture

The first thing that you will need to do is to choose an image that you want to do this to. Make sure that it is a picture that will benefit from this effect and will be easy to work with. You may want to take a practice picture until you are able to feel comfortable doing this with a picture that you plan to use.

Step 2: Open Photoshop

After you have picked out your desired picture, you will need to get your Photoshop program opened up. Once you have done this, you will need to go to the toolbar and select the elliptical marquee tool. You will need to hold down shift. Do this as a circle is created over the specific part of the image. Make sure the circle is highlighted over the part of the image that you wish to put this effect on. Typically, this effect works best on the main focus of the picture itself. After choosing the section, you will need to go to Select and from there, choose Inverse. This will create a circle around the highlighted area.

Step 3: Edit

Your next step will take place in the Edit section of your Photoshop. Once you have chosen Edit, you will need to select Copy. From there, go to Edit once again and this time choose Paste. What this will do is take the image that is inside of the circle, and it will remove it from the second layer.

Step 4: Blur

Once you have your layers picked out, you will be ready to add the effect onto your highlighted image. In order to do this, you will need to simply go to your Filter section in Photoshop. From there, choose Blur. In Blur, you will be given different types of Blur to choose from. Radial Blur is the type that is what works best for this effect. Once you have chosen this, you will need to get the settings right. For the amount, it is best to go with fifty. The blur method that you choose needs to be zoom and you will want the best quality. Once you have done this, you will simply keep the changes, and your newly Photoshopped picture will appear in front of you.

Step 5: Practice

It is in your best interest to practice this often. You will find that the more that you do this, the better you will be.
