How To Choose Images using Survey View in Lightroom

Lightroom is an application for image management, and it offers the flexibility of viewing, editing and organizing thousands of your digital photos. Since the software is built for managing a huge database of photos, there is a Library module which provides you with various ways of previewing your photos once they have been imported into Lightroom. In this Library module, there is a tool called Survey View which makes it easier to view your photos in a tiled preview. This feature offers a quick way of choosing the image or images you are searching for. The following steps will show you how you can choose images using this tool.

Step 1: Go to Library Module

Once you initialize Lightroom, it will open in the module you last quit. You can go to the Library Module by clicking on "Library" in the Module Picker.

Step 2: Select the Images You Want from Filmstrip

Once you are in the library module, it will be showing images of the chosen folder in Filmstrip at the bottom of the screen. You can choose the images you want by holding down the Control key and clicking on each image. Alternatively, you can select a group of images by clicking on the first one and then clicking on the last, holding down the Shift key.

Step 3: Enter Survey View

Click on the "View" tab in the top Menu and then select Survey from the drop down menu or alternatively press N. You can also click on the "Survey View" icon in the toolbar.

Step 4: Maximizing Viewing Area or Opening a Separate Window for Survey View

For ease of viewing your images in Survey View, you can close all other panels on the screen by pressing "Shift" and "Tab" keys at the same time. You can also open Survey View as a separate window by pressing the F11 key. This will become a secondary display, and you can work on a single image in the separate widow in a corner of your screen or shift this window to another screen if two monitors are being used.

Step 5: Add or Delete Images from Survey View

Once you have entered Survey View, you will see all the images in a tiled formation which you had selected in Filmstrip. You can add more images by holding down the Control key and clicking on the image in Filmstrip. You can also narrow down on the choice in Survey View by deleting some images you do not want. For this, click on the image and then click on the X which appears at the bottom right corner in the image or press the Control key and click on the image.

Step 6: Choosing an Image or Images in Survey View

Whatever images are there in Survey View after you have done your additions and deletions remain chosen when you exit Survey View. By clicking on G or E, you will exit Survey View and you can use your chosen images for different purposes.
