Final Cut Pro: Transform, Scale and Rotate Using the Wireframe Handles

Final Cut Pro allows you to use wireframe handles to transform, scale and rotate clips. You can achieve the same results by using the Motion tab, which is located in the Viewer, to adjust the parameters of a clip, but it is easier and faster to use wireframe handles. In order to use the wireframe handles, you must be in Image+Wireframe or Wireframe mode.

Scaling a Clip Using Wireframe Handles

To scale a clip using wireframe handles, you need to have the Timeline open and active. With the Timeline open, select the clip that you would like to scale. If you would like to scale the clip proportionally, you need to drag one of the scale and distort handles. The handles are located in the 4 corners of the clip. If you would like to scale a clip without worrying about the proportions of the clip, press the Shift key on your keyboard while you drag one of the scale and distort handles.

Moving a Clip Using Wireframe Handles

Final Cut Pro makes it very easy to move a clip by using the wireframe handles. To move a clip by using the wireframe handles, the Timeline must be open. From the Tool palette, select the Selection tool. You will then need to use the Selection tool to click and drag the clip to its new position. If needed, Final Cut Pro does permit you to move the clip outside of the Canvas.

Rotating a Clip Using Wireframe Handles

To begin rotating a clip by using wireframe handles, you need to select a clip in the Timeline. You will then need to access the Selection tool, which is available in the Tool palette. Use the Selection tool to drag the edge of the clip around the center point of the clip. If you only want to rotate your clip in 45 degree increments, you will need to press the Shift key on your keyboard while you are dragging the clip in an arc. In order to gain precise control over the rotation of your clip, drag the clip as far as possible away from the center point of the clip.

Distorting a Clip Using Wireframe Handles

You can distort the shape of a clip by using wireframe handles by selecting the clip that you wish to distort in the Timeline. From the Tool palette, you will need to select the Distort tool. To begin distorting the shape of the clip, use the Distort tool to drag one of the scale and distort handles, which are located in each corner of the clip. If you need to shorten one side of the clip while lengthening the other side of the clip, press the Shift key while you drag the wireframe handles.

Cropping a Clip Using Wireframe Handles

To crop a clip by using the wireframe handles, open the Timeline and select the clip that you would like to crop. You will need to access the Crop tool, which is located in the Tool palette. If you only need to crop one side of the clip, drag the wireframe handles in an inward position. To crop two sides of a clip at the same time, simply drag one of the wireframe handles.
