The Polar Panorama Effect: Create Your Own Photo Planets in Photoshop
Creating photo planets in Photoshop is a wonderful effect which makes your photographs look unique. Photoshop is a powerful image editing application which makes many projects surprisingly simple. A panoramic photo can be turned into an amazing planet to amaze your friends and family. As one of the most popular effects, it's likely that you've seen this photo planet effect before.
Step 1: Choosing a Photo
First, you need to choose a photo to use to create your photo planet.
A panoramic photo which has an aspect ratio of 2:1 will work the best.
You should also try to choose a photo where there is ground in the
bottom quarter of the photo, as this will make the planet look much more
Experiment with different photos to make your photo planets look different. Open the photo in Photoshop and make any corrections or touch ups if required.
Step 2: Resizing and Rotating the Image
Now, you need to prepare the image by resizing it so that it's a perfect square. To do this click on Image, Image Size. Uncheck the "Constrain Properties" option, and then set the height to exactly as the width. This will stretch the image upwards. Now, click Image, Rotate Canvas, 180 degrees. This is all the preparation that you need, and it will turn the image upside down.
Step 3: Polar Filter
To warp the image into a sphere, you will need to apply the Polar Filter. To do this, click on Filter, Distort, Polar Coordinates. In the dialog box, click on the Rectangular to Polar option. This will create something that looks like a planet, which means that you've almost finished. The only thing needed is some minor adjustments to improve the look and realism of the image.
Step 4: Touching up
Now, you need to rotate the image as much as you want to. Rotate the
planet so that it looks perfect. Then, all you need to do is adjust the
contrast and make any touch ups you want. You might want to get rid of
any irregularities by using the healing brush and clone tool.
Once you've done this, you have finished the effect. You should be left with a realistic looking planet made out of your panoramic photograph. If you're not happy with the results, then simply click Edit, Undo, in order to undo the changes one by one. Then, you can repeat the steps a second time.
Step 5: Saving the Image
After this you're finished, you can then save the image in whichever
format you want. If you intend on uploading it to the Internet, then you
will need to flatten the image and save it on your computer. Don't
forget to save this as a Photoshop file as well so that you can easily
edit it in the future.
