Memory Card Capacity: Why Lower is Better

When choosing memory cards you will need to think about the memory card capacity. This is the size of the card and will dictate how many pictures you can store on your memory card. Most people will choose the biggest memory card that they can afford. However, this isn't always the best idea.

Choosing a high capacity memory card will ensure that you have plenty of space to work with. However, there are also some downsides.

Reliability

Although SD cards and other types of memory card are very reliable they do have a limited life span. It's never possible to know exactly when a memory card is going to start letting you down. By buying several lower capacity memory cards you have plenty of backups just in case you find that one doesn't work anymore.

Cost

Smaller memory cards are much cheaper to buy. Buying a 32GB card for example will be much more than double the cost of a 16GB card. By buying 2 16GB or 4 8GB cards you will get the same capacity but much more convenience.

Convenience

Having several memory cards is also much more convenient than simply having one. This is because you will be able to leave one somewhere to have the photos printed or edited. If you only have one larger card then this won't be possible.
