Making the Optimum Set for Ultimatte
Ultimatte is a very sophisticated plug-in that was developed for video compositing. You will be able to use this advanced plug-in with a host of applications like Adobe After Effects, Adobe Photoshop, Apple Shake and Auto Desk. These videos and images can include finer details like smoke, shadow, transparent objects and much more. However, in order to be able to use this sophisticated plug-in, a good set must be setup so that Ultimatte can be used on the video during the post production stages. Given below are some steps on how to set up the perfect Chromakey set.
Step 1 - Select the Appropriate Backdrop
When setting up the set, the most essential item that you need to decide on is the backdrop. Usually a blue or a green backdrop is used to capture the film or the photograph. A green backdrop is a better option as most image sensors in the latest digital cameras are not sensitive to green. You should also keep in mind that a blue backdrop may match the person's clothing. Due to the higher luminance value in the color green, green screens provide better results if used as a backdrop. In certain cases magenta colored backgrounds are also used. You can even explore the options of using a retro non-reflective curtain as a background.
Step 2 - Select the Lighting
Lighting is a necessity when shooting against a blue or green screen as it helps to avoid the formation of shadow. To avoid unwanted spills and shadows, you will need to ensure that there is enough lighting around the Chromakey studio. Take care not to use a material that is too shiny as it will give you a reflection of the lighting as well as hot spots in the image or film. Using a matte surface will give you the best background effect you require. For the best effect, place the lighting on either side of the screen, or above and below the area the subject will be.
Step 3 - Select the Clothing for the Subject
The clothing that the subject wears is of great importance in order to shoot the perfect film or picture. It is very important that the Chromakey subject should not wear any clothing that is similar in color to the background as this will lead to the subject being drowned out by the screen.
Step 4 - Start Filming
Once you have the right backdrop, lighting setup and the subject in place, you can start filming your video or capture your photograph. When you film or take the photographs, make sure that there is a monitor available for the subject to view so they will be able to see exactly how to perform during the process.
Once you have shot the film or picture, you will be able to use Ultimatte and replace the background image to any background you desire.
