How to Use the Steadicam Pilot

Here is how you can use the steadicam pilot in a few easy steps.
Step 1: Attach the Camera
The first thing you need to do is attach the camera to the pilot. You have to find the center of gravity of the camera and place the camera to the mounting plate. Once you do it, you should secure the camera on the plate. Attach the camera on the sled and secure it using the screws of the system. Make sure that the knobs are also tight and safe.
Step 2: Set up the Docking Bracket
Take the balancing stud and the docking bracket and move the gimbal that adjusts the heaviness of the post. There are several adjustments you should make in order to ensure that the post and bracket are able to withstand the weight of the camera. You can move the spar, and slide the camera monitor or the battery to the side of the spar to ensure a better balance. The operation and construction of the steadicam pilot allows for maximum dynamic balance.
The next thing you need to do is slide the main post until you feel that the entire construction is balanced. Then, you should remove the gimbal toward the camera, making sure that the distance is no more than half inch; remove the clamp. Let the sled go; it should rotate within a few seconds. If you want to decrease the drop time, you can raise the gimbal and let it go low if you want to make the drop time longer. Remove the lower spar, making sure that everything is still balanced.
Step 3: Adjust the Vest
Once you have set up the post of the camera, you should take the vest and make the proper adjustments so as to use the pilot. Make sure that the vest is tight on your body and does not slip, because if that happens, you might lose the control of the post and camera. Stability is always an issue when it comes to video professionals, so the vest should fit properly. You should wear it in a way that lets your hips stay free; the vest should lock around your hips, allowing you to move freely.
Step 4: Adjust the Arm
Once you feel that the vest sits properly on you, you should adjust the arm rest. Stand naturally and adjust the forearm and the upper arm part, making sure that the brackets fit properly.
