How to Personalize a Picture Frame

There are dozens of different types of picture frame which you can consider buying. However, sometimes people will prefer to customize their own. Although it would be possible to make your own photo frames from scratch this would be time consuming and difficult.

A much simper solution is to buy a photo frame off the shelf and then customize it yourself. Customizing and personalizing a photo frame is a very simple way to make it look completely different.

Tools and Materials Needed

  • Picture Frame
  • Primer
  • Glue
  • Newspaper
  • Paint
  • Trinkets (Optional)

Step 1 - Choosing a Frame

The first thing that you should do is choose a suitable frame. Make sure that this will be able to fit your photo or piece of artwork inside effectively. Also, remember that if you want to fit a photo mat around your photo or picture then you will need to ensure that the frame is bigger.

Step 2 - Preparing the Frame

If you are painting a solid wood frame, then you will first need to do some preparation to make sure that it can be painted properly. If there are any knots in the wood then these will need to be treated otherwise they could bleed through the paint work.

Remove the glass from the frame by taking the back off and pressing the glass out. Then leave the wood of the photo frame on a piece of newspaper so that painting it can be much easier and not as messy. If you're painting MDF or plywood frames then you might first need to apply a primer.

Step 3 - Painting the Frame

Now paint the picture frame using a suitable type of paint in the right color. Make sure that every part of the photo frame is covered including any crevices or areas which might not normally get covered in paint. A stiff bristled brush might make this easier. Choose a paint which is suitable for the material of frame that you are dealing with.

Step 4 - Drying

Leave the picture frame where it is overnight to allow it plenty of time to dry. If you really must move the frame then do so by lifting and moving the sheet of newspaper.

Step 5 - Fixing on Trinkets

This step is completely optional, whether or not you want to do this is completely up to you. Any small trinkets such as love hearts, or various other things can be glued onto the frame to complete the look. Allow the glue to dry fully before doing anything else to the frame.

Step 6 - Finishing the Frame

Now you simply need to finish the frame and protect it so that the paint doesn't get scratched off. A coat of clear varnish should be enough to provide plenty of protection and prevent the paint from being damaged.

Step 7 - Assembly

Once everything is completely dry you will then need to turn the frame over on its back and then put the glass back into the frame. The picture can then be put inside and the back secured in place. This will finish the personalized frame and make it look completely unique.
