How to Connect a Camera Flash Cord

An external camera flash cord can be used to connect an external flash to many model cameras. There are steps that need to be taken to safely connect the external flash to the camera. Here's how you can set yours up quickly.

What You'll Need

  • Camera
  • Camera flash cord (auto sync cords work best)

Step 1: Check the Manual

The first thing you should do is check the owner's manual for your model camera to make sure an external flash can be safely added. The manual may also have directions listed or recommendations for the type of flash cord that is best.

Step 2: Prepare the Camera

The camera needs to be turned off for an auto-sync flash cord to sync correctly. If you leave the camera on, the sync may not work properly.

Step 3: Attach the Cord

Attach the cord to the camera first. Then attach the other end of the cord to the flash unit. Check the connections to make sure they are secure.

Step 4: Turn It On

Turn the camera on. The camera should recognize the flash is connected. You can set the camera to operate the external flash. Take a few test pictures to ensure it works. If it doesn't work, refer to the troubleshooting guide in the reference manual provided with either the camera or the flash unit.
