Distribution: How To Make Your Own Podcast
A podcast is becoming an increasingly popular way to communicate with large numbers of people on the Internet. These podcasts are either short audio files or videos which can be uploaded to your website or blog. Visitors can then either watch the video on their computer or download them to their portable video player to watch on the move. Another name for video podcasts is vodcasts.
Making your own vodcast is actually surprisingly simple. You can either use your web cam or a more sophisticated video camera. The video will then need to be edited to make it suitable for uploading onto the Internet. This will involve making the video as small as possible without noticeably impacting the quality.
Step 1: Ideas
Your video pod cast will only be successful if you have something to talk about. Creating a pod cast without a clear aim isn't going to do you any good. Think about exactly what you want to talk about ad try to create a series of bullet points to talk about. You should try to keep the video to around 15 or 20 minutes in length. This will reduce the size of the video.
Step 2: Connecting Camera
If you are using a web cam then you need to connect it to your computers USB port. Alternatively if you're using a camcorder then you will need to skip this step.
Step 3: Setting Recording Options
When using a web cam you should adjust the recording options so that the video is the correct size and format. Find the setting for the output size of the video and change it to 320 x 240. The frame rate should be set to 24 and 8 bit color. Make sure that any high quality options are not checked because this will create videos which are far too large. Once you have adjusted the settings, click 'ok.'
If you're using a camcorder then you might not be able to adjust these settings on the camera itself. Instead record as normal and edit later.
Step 4: Positioning the Camera
A podcast should normally film your face. Position the camera so that it is eye level. Avoid sitting too close to the camera though because it can distort the image. Try to arrange the lighting so that you are able to clearly see everything in the video.
Step 5: Microphone
If possible you should connect a microphone rather than relying on the mic in your web cam or camera. This will produce a much better quality audio track and will also eliminate problems that background noise can cause. o matter how quiet you think your computer is it's sure to make some noise due to the fan.
Step 6: Testing
Record a short video just to test that the results look ok. Play it back and check that the placement of the camera, audio and quality of the video are all correct. If needed you can now make adjustments.
Step 7: Recording
When you are happy with the quality of the recordings you need to start recording your vodcast. To do this look into the camera and speak slowly and clearly. Don't worry about needing to shoot the video a number of times if required.
Once you have finished recording you can then edit the results to cut out anything that you don't need. This will reduce the size and improve professionally of your podcast. If you used a camcorder then you might need to edit the results to make the video file much smaller.
Step 8: Uploading
Upload the podcast video to your site or blog. You will need to create a suitable description so that people will be able to find your vodcast and decide whether or not they want to watch the video.
