Do It Yourself, Moving Camera Rig
A moving camera rig is a piece of equipment which is designed to keep your camera steady when moving. Jerky footage is something that is only ever tolerated in home movies. Professional videographers simply can't get away with shaky footage. A steady camera rig is a fairly simple piece of equipment when you look at it, however, it is extremely expensive. It's possible to make one of these camera rigs on a fairly small budget.
Step 1: Prepare the Tools
First, you will need to collect all of the tools that you will need to build the stedicam. You will need a drill, drill bit, vise and a few other bits and pieces. You will need to use a high quality drill bit which can cut through Galvanized steel. You'll also need a screwdriver and wrench which are suitable for the screws and bolts that you are using. You should also get a hammer for gentle adjustments.
Step 2: Collect Required Parts
Once you have the tools, you will then need to collect the parts required. You need three pipes which are 10 inches in length. You can choose longer or shorter poles depending on your preferences. It is possible to cut the poles yourself, but it's much easier if you get the home hardware store to cut them to size for you. Galvanized steel poles will normally be strong enough and work quite well. End caps are useful to cover the sharp ends of the pipes.
A simple T-joint fitting is also required. You should be able to get this from a plumbing store or home hardware shop. Then, you will need to choose a weight to use. This is just a barbell weight, which can be brought from a sporting equipment store. You will be able to buy any weight, but bear in mind that the heavier the weight, the more problematic it will be to carry around. Also, ensure that the weight has a big enough hole for the pipe to fit through.
Step 3: Make the Handle
Fit the tee joint onto one end of the pipe and an end cap to the other. This will make a fairly basic handle. Then, put the end caps in the vice and drill a hole in the center. This doesn't have to be dead in the center, but it needs to be as close as possible.
Step 4: Create the Camera Mount
Now, you will need to make the camera mount, which can be used to connect the camera rig to your camcorder. This is made out of a bolt, washers, a nut, a wing nut and one of the drilled end caps.
Push the bolt through the drilled end cap and secure it in place with the lock nuts. Make sure that this is fixed securely in position because it may be loosened every time you screw your camera into the tripod mount.
Step 5: Create the Steady Cam Mount
The steady cam mount will work by using a counterweight. You need to fit the lens cap with the hole in on one side of the weight and then a large washer on the other. Then, secure the washer in place using bolts. Make sure everything is tightened and secure.
Step 6: Use the Steadycam
Once everything is assembled, you should then fit the camera and start experimenting with it.
