Wedding Videos: Filming for Montages

Wedding videos offer a great opportunity to film a montage. The footage, along with still photographs, can be edited to create a sequence that shows a passage of time in the lives of the bride and groom.

A wedding video montage of events leading up the wedding can be shown at the reception, while another montage can be created by shooting video throughout the wedding day, showing the progression of the wedding ceremony to the reception.

Wedding videos give you a chance to be creative with your montage. For your montage, you will need the following:

  • Photos, digital or print
  • Computer
  • External hard drive or USB flash storage device
  • Scanner
  • Video editing software
  • Music

Step 1: Choose Photos

Choose all of the photos that you would like to include in your montage, along with the video that you will shoot. Place them in order starting with photos of the bride and groom from when they were young children to later stages in their life, and then when they became a couple. Throw in a few funny photos also.

Step 2: Plan Your Shots

When creating a video montage, it is important to plan your shots carefully to complement the still photos you have chosen. Make sure to shoot video of important events of the wedding day, such as the ceremony, the couple's first dance, cutting the cake and throwing of the bouquet. Also, make sure to include family and bridal party members in the shots.

Step 3: Scan Print Photos

Scan all of the print photos and save them to a labeled folder in your computer. If you do not have the room on your computer, you can save the photos to an external hard drive or USB flash storage device. Make sure the photos have been kept in order while saving.

Step 4: Choose Music

Find music that both the bride and groom enjoy, as well as any music that fits particular photos. Make sure to have a mix of up tempo music, as well as slower romantic music. You can import music from iTunes or from any MP3 devices. You can also download music from the Internet. Save the music files to your computer.

Step 5: Open Video Editing Software

Open your video editing software and import all pertinent photo and music files. Upload all of the video that you have taken of the wedding and reception. Create opening titles and choose the first music track. Choose the photos for the first section to add to the music track. Use transitions between each of the photos for a smooth effect. Repeat these steps to create the rest of the montage. Create an end title to finish.

Step 6: Review Your Work

Render the video to review your work. Make sure that the sequence of the montage is correct and make any changes or additions as necessary.
