How to Start a Career as a Professional Freelance Photographer
Becoming a freelance photographer is a great way to earn money on the side. As a freelancer, a photographer can set his own hours to work and choose his clients and which specialty to pursue. The following are a few steps to pursuing a career in freelance photography.
Step 1: Train, Train, Train
Learn beyond the basics of using the camera. Understand the field, the various specializations available and the skills needed. Take several photography courses and learn from experts in the field. Practice photographing a variety of subjects and environments. Master how the camera works in certain situations.
Step 2: Purchase the Necessary Equipment
Pursuing photography as a professional career is not cheap. Photographers need to own at least some of the essential high end equipment. This includes at least one digital camera, a set of lenses, a tripod, additional lighting sources, filters, diffusers and so on. Master how each type of equipment works.
Step 3: Build a Portfolio
A portfolio helps in getting jobs and getting noticed. Include only the best samples of work. Potential clients only have a limited amount of time to scan through the collection so make each image count. The style should remain consistent throughout the portfolio. Include only the most recent photographs, five years at the maximum. Create at least one hardcopy and one online portfolio. Adapt the portfolio to suit the client’s requirements.
