How to Get Spot Focus for Wedding Photography

Spot focus is a useful skill to master for anyone who is interested in wedding photography. Spot focus is simply where a single object is perfectly in focus while the background is blurred and out of focus.

By mastering spot focus skills you will be able to create memorable photos that will help the happy couple remember the subtleties of their wedding day forever.

Tools and Materials Needed

  • Digital Camera
  • Lens

Step 1 - Choosing a Subject

The first thing that you need to do is find something to take a photo of. You can apply spot focus skills to many different types of photographs and subjects. The key is to experiment by taking spot photos of different subjects so that you can get a feel for when the technique is useful.

Step 2 - Focusing the Photo

Most cameras have different auto-focus modes, including full auto-focus and spot focus. If your camera has these modes then you should first put it into spot focus mode. A digital SLR camera will have many extra features that are useful when trying to take spot photos.

To focus your camera, look through the viewfinder and press the button half the way down. When you press the shutter half way it will focus the camera. You will be able to see exactly what the camera is focusing on by looking at the red dots in the viewfinder. To create a spot focus wedding photo, keep the focus locked in the center of the picture. If the camera isn't focusing on the right thing then release the shutter and trying again.

Step 3 - Focus Lock

If your camera doesn't have a spot focus mode and you're struggling to achieve the effect, you can use lock focus to achieve a similar effect. Point the camera at something that it will focus on, press the shutter down half way and then move it back to frame the shot. Once you are satisfied with the shot, press the shutter right down to take the photo.

Focus lock can be difficult to master, so practice the technique to get it right. Never experiment when taking wedding day photographs because there's too much pressure, and you may make a mistake.

Step 4 - Practice

Before you consider using spot focus techniques for any wedding photographs it's important to practice and make sure that you are skilled enough to pull it off. You don't want to risk ruining a client's wedding photos because you are trying out a new technique.

Step 5 - Using Software

You don't actually have to use your camera to achieve spot focus in your wedding photos. A much easier option is to use software, such as Paint Shop Pro or Adobe Photoshop, when editing to create the spot focus effect. Using this software makes it possible to take average photos quickly then use the software to create a spot focus effect.
