How to Get into the Executive Portrait Market

All businesses will need to invest in executive portrait photography at one time or another. This makes the executive photography business very lucrative and worthwhile. If you want to start making a name for yourself in the executive photo business, then there are a number of different things that you will need to do.

Photographing executives isn't really that difficult, as long as you have the right tools and materials available you should be able to easily break into the executive photo market.

Step 1 - Getting Experience

In order to break into the executive portrait market you will need to get experience. Getting experience is actually much easier than you might imagine because it's simply a matter of either following a photographer around for free, or asking organizations if they will let you take their photos for free.

Start with a basic head and shoulders shot. This is an all-purpose portrait that can be used for media stories or when you do not have another appropriate picture. Take several different pictures including one with the executive smiling and one with a more serious look.

Step 2 - Improving Your Skills

You will need to improve your skills so that you can take better photos, which will, in turn, make it possible to promote your business much better. There are a number of different skills which will be valuable. Start by getting a shot of the person at their desk, this is an essential type of portrait photography because it allows you to see them at work. Make sure that the background is as tidy as possible as this will ensure that it doesn't distract from the person in the photo.

You will also need to find a way of making the executive look powerful. One way to do this is to take a photo of the executive with some employees. In this case, the executive should not be making eye contact with the camera.

Another type of executive portrait is in the company's production facilities, this will show the executive overseeing production or checking out the state of the store.

Step 3 - Building a Portfolio

You should now choose some of the photos that you like and put these into your portfolio. The portfolio can either be a book, CD or a web site. This will be useful in breaking into the executive photo market.  Make sure you have good variety within your portfolio.

Step 4 - Marketing Your Services

You will now need to concentrate on marketing your services by either promoting your web site or by promoting your business. Try and contact companies which may be interested in hiring your services. If they seem interested, then try to send them a copy of your price list and website address. The Internet has made it much easier and cheaper to promote your photography business and allows other companies to learn about your services.

Breaking into the market for the first time is very difficult, however after you have landed your first job the rest should be pretty easy.
