How to Get into a Fashion Photography Career
There are few careers more interesting, lucrative and stressful than a fashion photography career. While not for everyone, this job provides new faces and new fashions every day. The tips listed below may help you get into the business and put your name out there to start a career in the field.
Find others with your same interests. Go to social network sites and type in what you are looking for, be it "fashion photography" or simply "photography". Scroll through the listings of people. Remember to view their profiles along with their work. You will get a better feel for what they can bring to you and the beginning of your career. Remember, many of these people are also new to the profession so do not expect to jump into the business right away.
Give an Incentive
Give people a reason to visit you and get your name out there. Provide free portraits to those willing to allow you to photograph them. Tell other photographers that you will split profits on a photo shoot. You want to get a positive response from those around you. Giving out something for free or for a reduced price is just the right move to get your name out in the field.
Go to other studios. They do not have to be fashion photography studios. Get a feel for what they offer, their pricing, and what kind of experience they have. This will help you learn more about the industry and get a feel for your competition. Those in the business are more than willing to help you in return for your interest and cooperation. Perhaps they would like to swap customers and advertise for you if you are willing to do the same for them.
Buy Your Equipment
Once you have decided you would like to put your time and effort into this career choice, you must make a choice as to the equipment that you will need. If you are starting off small and do not have a large amount of money to invest on a top notch camera, a mid-range camera will you approximately $7,000. While this may seem like a large amount, keep in mind that you can easily make that back, and more, in a few photo shoots. A decent camera will be an amazing investment. If you get a low quality camera, the pictures will reflect this.
Use Free Resources
The library is a great free resource. They will be more than willing to help you in your endeavor of photography. There is no cost to check out a book on the industry or even look through the vast array of magazines available. These may help give you advice on the poses, models and industry standards. You can simply walk through a bookstore to get your ideas. While they may not want you to linger around all day, they will be more than willing to help you find the book that you need.
