Pictographics Introduces inCamera® Digital Camera and Scanner ICC Profiling Software

Pictographics International Corporation, a leading developer of digital color technology software, has released inCamera®, a digital camera and scanner ICC profiling plug-in for Adobe® Photoshop. inCamera is based on Pictographics’ widely acclaimed and proven digital camera and scanner profiling technologies and features an easy to use interface and a User Guide that explains how to successfully create and use ICC input profiles in Photoshop. inCamera is available for $149.95 at www.picto.com.

inCamera is designed to help the digital photographer achieve consistent, predictable color with any digital camera or scanner. It employs Pictographics’ CandelaColor® Digital Color Technology to describe, with mathematical precision, the unique behavior and color properties of any digital camera or scanner through a process known as profiling. Utilizing the GretagMacbeth ColorChecker® or ColorChecker DC charts for digital cameras, or IT8 target or ColorChecker charts for scanners, inCamera evaluates the color data captured by the camera or scanner, compares the data to the known color values of the chart, and creates a custom ICC profile. The profile may then be applied to all images shot under similar conditions correcting the color distortions of the camera to produce a color corrected and profiled image ready for use in any project.

inCamera can also be used to profile scanners for negative film, heretofore an “untouchable” area of color management, because of the unavailability of IT8 targets for negative film. The process, based on the digital camera profiling technology and the ColorChecker charts, is described in the inCamera User Guide, an integrated on-line guide to creating and using input profiles in a Photoshop ICC color managed workflow.

inCamera is compatible with Photoshop 5.0, 6.0, and 7.0 and the following operating systems: Macintosh 8.6, 9.2, and 10.1and 10.2 in both Native and Classic modes and Windows 98, Me, 2000, and XP.

Tzolkin Corporation Introduces Free Integrated Digital Photo Server and Free File and Photo Sharing Capability for All Users of the TZO Dynamic DNS Service

BOSTON--Jan. 16, 2003--Tzolkin Corporation, provider of the TZO Dynamic DNS Service, today announced the release of TZO Client Version 2.1. The new client includes the free TZO Photo Server software that allows TZO users to display digital photos online quickly and easily. It also provides a file sharing capability so others can download and print the photos at their original resolution.

A primary advantage of having a digital camera is that it provides the ability to put photos on a PC quickly and easily. Tzolkin's new TZO Photo Server software takes the process one step further and allows a TZO user to make digital photos available to anyone via the web. The TZO Photo Server automatically constructs web pages containing the photos and, with a few mouse clicks, displays them using the free TZO Web Server, also included in the TZO client software. Anyone anywhere in the world can then view the photos through a web browser. But if the TZO user prefers, the photos can be password protected, limiting access to the photos.

The TZO Dynamic DNS Service allows small businesses, associations, and individuals to run a web site, photo server, email server and more on their own systems and at their own locations whether they have a static or dynamic IP address. Having a dynamic IP address typically prevents users from running an Internet server. But the TZO service detects the user's current IP address and, when it changes, automatically updates the user's DNS record with the new IP address. The reliability of the TZO service is assured through a distributed dynamic DNS server system with redundant DNS servers in 5 different locations throughout North America.

Transcend Boosts Data Transfer on CompactFlash to 30X

Taipei, Taiwan, January 8 -- In May 2002, Transcend Information Inc. (Transcend) announced the availability of Transcend's Ultra Performance 25X CompactFlash memory cards. Today, Transcend announces the release of the improved, Ultra Performance 30X CompactFlash memory cards in capacities of 128MB, 256MB, 512MB, and 1GB.

Data transfer at 1X represents a rate for Flash memory of about 150KB/sec. Ultra Performance 30X therefore boosts data transfer to a maximum data transfer rate of about 4.5MB/sec. This increase in data transfer rate is extremely beneficial when using devices such as high resolution Digital Still Cameras. With the rapid growth in digital image resolution from 1M and 2M pixel CCD/CIS sensors to 4M or even 6M pixel CCD/CIS sensors, the data transfer rate to the Flash memory becomes a critical factor.

Testing of Transcend's Ultra Performance 30X CompactFlash Card indicates that it achieves a read speed of up to 4.8 MB/sec and a write speed of up to 4.0MB/sec--2.5 to 3.5 times faster data transfer than a traditional CompactFlash Card. The Transcend Ultra Performance 30X CompactFlash card is the ideal companion for high-resolution digital cameras and other high-performance applications that require CompactFlash memory cards.

Samsung SCD5000: MiniDV Camcorder and 4-Megapixel Digicam in One Device

LAS VEGAS--Jan. 9, 2003--Samsung Electronics today unveils the SCD5000, the latest in Samsung's line of digital convergence products that seamlessly combines the benefits of a MiniDV digital camcorder with a four mega-pixel digital camera.

Unlike other similar products that have either poor resolution for stills or extremely limited recording time and quality for motion pictures, the SCD5000 performs superbly at both functions.

The SCD5000's unique swivel lens mechanism permits easy switching between the two functions; one side of the assembly houses the camcorder lens and sensor and the other side holds the mechanism for the digital still camera.

The digital still camera function creates sharp images with 4.13 mega-pixel CCD resolution. Compared to most digital camcorders that store low-resolution still images at 640 x 480 pixels, the SCD5000 produces 2272 x 1704 images suitable for large size prints. Additionally, the SCD5000's embedded strobe allows still picture taking in low light conditions. Other features include a 3x optical zoom for camera and swivel lens assembly. The images can be stored in Memory Stick media and transferred through USB ports.

As a digital camcorder, the SCD5000 features 680K pixel CCD, MiniDV and MPEG-4 recording. The lens allows users the option of a 10X optical or 800x digital zoom. Samsung's proprietary Power Nite Pix function greatly improves picture quality under unfavorable light conditions. And the SCD5000's two-inch trans-reflective LCD viewfinder ensures optimal clarity even under direct sunlight. Captured footage is transferred through the IEEE1394 (FireWire) connector.

Samsung ITCAM-7 - The World's First HDD Digital Camcorder

LAS VEGAS--Jan. 9, 2003--Samsung Electronics today unveiled the ITCAM-7 - the world's first Hard Disk Drive (HDD) digital camcorder. The device offers today's consumers a variety of options to capture their favorite moments - whether on video, audio or image.

Rather than tape, Samsung's ITCAM-7 uses a 1.5 GB HDD to store still and motion pictures, as well as music, audio and data files - enabling it to hold more than one hour of high-quality footage. And, thanks to its built-in USB 2.0 port, transferring an hour of footage to your computer takes only five minutes.

The ITCAM-7 saves each new shot as a separate media file, making it possible to locate a specific clip instantly and simple to organize media clips for editing. Editing software is bundled with each ITCAM-7 for consumer convenience.

The ITCAM-7 also works as a portable movie player. An MPEG-4 media file can be played back - 30 frames per second - at 640x480 screen resolution on its two-inch trans-reflective screen, or a TV screen. Through its embedded RCA port, the ITCAM-7 can connect to a television or VCR to display or record audio-visual content. Media formats such as MP3s are also supported for playback.

Archive Creator: New Innovative Archiving Solution for Digital Photographers

PictureFlow LLC, makers of YarcPlus, the popular Canon RAW conversion program, today announced the launch of the official release version of their latest product, Archive Creator; an innovative archiving solution for the Windows OS that deals directly with the issues of archiving digital photographic images onto removable media. Archive Creator will automatically span an Archive Set across multiple CDs thereby maximizing the storage potential while minimizing the time required to organize the files in an efficient manner.

This new official release version 1.1 builds on the success of the pre-release version that has been available for the past month. Based largely on user feedback, this version includes an enriched feature set including:

  • Additional Index options
  • Additional support for RAW file formats (now including most RAW files from Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Minolta, Fuji, and others)
  • Additional support for JPEG2000 files
  • Added CD Burner compatibility
  • Faster Index processing
During the archive process, Archive Creator automatically makes an HTML "Web Style" Index of all of the source files within the Archive Set. Even from most popular RAW file formats including Canon, Nikon, and others. This Index of the entire Archive Set is written onto each CD (or optionally just 1 or a separate CD). This is extremely powerful as you can then view the thumbnails and viewing images from the entire Archive Set from any 1 of the CDs. This means that later if you are looking for an image, you can insert any 1 of the CDs from the Archive Set and find the image that you are looking for without having to shuffle CDs. The index is written in pure HTML and does not require any special software to be on the viewing computer except for Internet Explorer (or compatible browser). The Archive CDs are compatible with both Windows and Mac systems and most Internet Browser versions.

Version 1.1 supports the burning of CD-R media, with DVD support planned very soon in a free upcoming upgrade. The new V1.1 software is available by download and will run in a free demo mode for an unlimited time. The introductory price of Archive Creator V1.1 is $40 including near term upgrades.

Hitachi Buys IBM's Hard Disk Drive Business - Plans To Sell 4GB Microdrive in the Fall

At the end of December 2002 Hitachi bought IBM's disk drive business and has formed a new Hitachi Global Storage Technologies company. In addition to the desktop and laptop hard drives, Hitachi will also be producing the popular 1-inch Microdrive. Hitachi Global Storage said that it plans to sell a 1-inch Microdrive with 4 gigabytes of storage. Currently the largest Microdrive that IBm has produced only holds 1 gigabyte of data. The CompactFlash Type II form factor Microdrive is extremely popular in high resolution digital cameras, PDAs and MP3 players.

Besides the 4-fold increase in capacity the new Microdrive will use a newly designed read-write head that is half the size of the current one. This equates to a 40% decrease in the height at which it travels over the disk platter. The increased data capacity is due to its five-layer coating of "Pixie Dust" which is a three-atom-thick layer of precious metal sandwiched inbetween three magnetic layers. The new Microdrive will have a 50% increased data transfer rate and Hitachi estimates that it will be faster than today's solid-state data storage devices. Pricing for the new drive will be announced later in the year.

Nikon D100 and Coolpix 2500 Cameras Stolen from Nikon Germany Warehouse

From our friends at digitalkamera.de comes this information:

On the 21st of December 2002, there was a burglary in the warehouse of Nikon Germany. 192 D100 digital SLRs and 100 Coolpix 2500 cameras were stolen. There is a reward from Nikon of up to 36,000 EUR for any information about the stolen cameras. A list of the serial numbers from the stolen D100s (at least a part of) along with some contact information can be found - in German - under the following link: http://www.nikon.de/Rund1-03.doc (this is a Word document not a web page.)
If you're planning on buying a D100 from a seller on eBay or someone other than a regular Nikon dealer it would be wise to ask for the serial number and check it against this list before you pay your money.
