Kodak Professional DCS Pro 14n Ships This Week

February 27, 2003 - Kodak Professional begins shipping its DCS Pro 14n Digital Camera this week, which means the first units will start arriving at Kodak-authorized dealers during the first week of March 2003. The DCS Pro 14n camera - featuring a 13.89-megapixel, full-frame CMOS sensor, magnesium body for exceptional durability, basic and advanced operation settings, and the ability to capture high-quality images at three different resolutions - arrives in time for the PMA trade show in Las Vegas.

Designed to be easy to learn and to use, the DCS Pro 14n camera delivers the sharpest images possible today and will receive a number of important enhancements over the next several months through firmware upgrades to optimize its specifications. Firmware upgrades are free to Kodak Professional digital camera customers, and are a compelling part of the DCS Pro 14n camera's value and appeal - the ability to "renew" the camera regularly by adding functional enhancements and new capabilities.

The DCS Pro 14n camera exhibits some variances in the specifications that were cited at its introduction at the Photokina trade show last September. For example, shots per battery charge is rated at 400, up a third from the announced 300 shots. The camera, originally configured to accept a 3-gigabyte storage card, will accept 4-gigabyte cards once they become available. Enhancements are planned for the file transfer rate (dependent upon third-party software capabilities), jpeg burst depth and long exposure settings. Activation of the camera's MMC/SD storage slot will be part of an upcoming firmware upgrade. And improvements to ISO range will be sought. Effective ISO range is now 80 - 800 at 50 percent (3.4 megapixel) and 67 percent (6 megapixel) resolution, and 80 - 400 at 100 percent (13.5 megapixel) resolution.

Due to the tremendous interest in and demand for the camera, it probably will be several months before every currently open back order can be filled. For most countries, Kodak Professional has instituted an allocation plan to help ensure an equitable distribution of cameras. Suggested U.S. list price for the DCS Pro 14n camera remains at USD $4,995. Dealers determine "street price." Based on current demand, it is likely initial U.S. street prices probably will stay very close to the suggested list price.

Photoshop Camera Raw Plug-in Supports Digital Cameras and Uncompressed Formats

SAN JOSE, Calif. - February 19, 2003 (NASDAQ: ADBE) - Adobe Systems Incorporated, the leader in network publishing, today announced the immediate availability of Photoshop Camera Raw and JPEG 2000 plug-ins. The Photoshop Camera Raw plug-in delivers lightning-fast, easy access - within Photoshop - to "raw" image formats in professional and mid-range digital cameras from Canon, Kodak, Fujifilm, Minolta, Nikon and Olympus.

Available as a software add-on that works with Photoshop 7.0.1 software, the Photoshop Camera Raw plug-in allows photographers to directly manipulate the original data captured by a digital camera sensor, producing images with superior tonal range and the maximum amount of detail.

This uncompressed raw image, a "digital negative," is often preferred by professional photographers because of the precise control over tonal range and image detail it allows. Accessing the raw image before conversion into formats like JPEG and TIFF allows users to adjust the white balance, saturation and sharpness instead of leaving these decisions to the camera's automatic settings. Bundled with an additional plug-in that adds Photoshop support for the recently released JPEG 2000 format, the Photoshop Camera Raw software can be downloaded today from Adobe's web site.

With Digital SLR cameras replacing traditional film across professional photographic disciplines, photographers require a standardized way of accessing and working with uncompressed digital negatives. Using the Photoshop Camera Raw plug-in, adjustments can be made to the uncompressed file, including: white balance; temperature; tint; exposure; shadows; contrast; color saturation; sharpness; and smoothness.

The plug-in also provides the ability to preview raw files within Photoshop software's File Browser, and files can be imported directly into Photoshop in full quality, 16-bit-per-channel mode. For each supported camera, default and custom raw image settings are available and can be adjusted and saved between sessions. With the ability to apply settings across multiple files from the same photo shoot, the result is increased quality in the final image, less after-import manipulation, and greater efficiency in the workflow for the photographic or graphic professional.

A complete list of camera models and proprietary raw formats supported is available at: www.adobe.com/products/photoshop/cameraraw.html.

The Photoshop Camera Raw and JPEG 2000 plug-ins are available together, as a single download, from Adobe.com for US$99. The software is also available, in English only, on Adobe's worldwide web sites today. The plug-ins will work with non-English language versions of Photoshop 7.0.1. Japanese versions of the plug-ins are expected to be available later in the first quarter of 2003, and will be sold direct from www.adobe.co.jp.

Check out the Adobe Camera Raw review at Outback Photo, our good friend Uwe has been using it for a while now and highly recommends it for the serious digi-photographers out there.

If a user has accidentally deleted or formatted their media, this program can recover that data, even if the media has become corrupted. The program does not write to the media, but stores the recovered files in a user-defined location.

MediaRECOVER helps users repair files that are unusable due to the following reasons:

  • Corruption due to the card being pulled out while the camera is on
  • Corruption due to turning the camera off during a write process
  • Inadvertent camera/computer shutdown
  • Data corruption to critical areas
  • Formatting and using between different cameras/computers
  • Other events that could cause damage to data
MediaRECOVER retrieves the following file types: Images: JPEG, EXIF, TIFF, PNG, GIF, BMP, RAW Images, Canon CRW, Nikon NEF, Kodak DCR, and others. Audio/video clips: AVI, MOV, MPG/MPEG

The system requirements are a memory card reader, such as the PROMASTER USB Card Readers (the media has to be appear as a drive), any Windows platform and a hard drive (or another storage media) space the size of the media.

SAN JOSE, CA (February 13, 2003) -- The Addonics Technologies today announced a multi- format Firewire interface Flash memory reader/writer that allows both Macintosh and PC users to transfer digital media files at up to 400 Mbits/sec to seven different formats. The company also announced USB 2.0 compatibility for its Mini DigiDrive and Internal DigiDrive.

Addonics Firewire Mini DigiDrive eliminates the necessity to carry different types of Flash readers. With the Firewire Mini DigiDrive users can have multi-format compatibility with CF-I, CF-II, Smart Media, Memory Stick, Micro Drive, Multimedia Card, and Secure Digital Card media. The device can also simultaneously read/write to and exchange data among two different media types. The compact Firewire Mini DigiDrive measures 4.53 in (W) x 1.2 in (D) x 3.0 in (H) and weighs just 5 ounces.

To ensure compatibility with 6-pin and older 4-pin Firewire systems Addonics provides a standard 6-pin Firewire cable as well as an adapter cable that converts 6-pin Firewire to a 4-pin iLink port. The adapter cable is a Y cable with one end that connects to the iLink port and another end to the standard USB port. Operating system support includes Windows 98SE, Me, 2000, XP, Mac OS 8.6 or higher. Once the drive is installed, an icon for each type of media automatically appears under the My Computer folder in Windows.

The Addonics USB 2.0 Mini DigiDrive is a palm size solution, which measures 3.75 in (W) x 3.18 in (D) x .6 in (H) and retails for $42.00. The Addonics USB 2.0 Internal DigiDrive fits any 3.5" drive bay and has a list price of $55.00. Both drives support the same seven media types as the Firewire Mini DigiDrive.

Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ1 First Look Posted

We just recently received one of the new Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ1 cameras and haven't had a chance to get many sample photos yet - the weather has been lousy here for many days now. This is a very interesting camera, especially the optically stabilized 12x Leica super-zoom lens. The DMC-FZ1 joins the likes of the Olympus C-2100UZ and the Canon Pro90 digicams with their stabilized zoom lenses. The FZ1 is amazingly small, the pictures we saw from Photokina made it look bigger but it's really very compact. Check out our FZ1 First Look and come back later in the week to see some sample pictures, hopefully our weather will clear in the next few days. We also need to get a user manual in English to do a full review, we had to get our camera from Europe as there are none in the U.S. yet.

Fujifilm Introduces the 256MB xD-Picture Card For Digital Photographers

ELMSFORD, NY, Feb. 4, 2003 - Fuji Photo Film Co. U.S.A., Inc., a leader in innovative imaging and information products and services, today introduces the 256MB xD-Picture Card, a high-capacity flash memory format for digital cameras. The new 256MB card began shipping to consumer electronics, photography and other retailers in January.

At a capacity of 256MB, and under optimum conditions, the xD-Picture Card can store up to 444 digital images, captured at 3 megapixels and recorded at normal resolution (average file size of 590KB). Currently the smallest storage format of its kind on the market, the xD-Picture Card is comparable in size to a penny, measuring just 0.79" x 0.98" x 0.07" and weighing less than one-tenth of an ounce. The xD-Picture Card, developed by Fujifilm and Olympus and announced last July, is expected to meet the capacity demand for greater storage, with an eventual storage limit of 8GB in a single card.

"The small size and high-capacity of the xD-Picture Card allows manufacturers to develop smaller, lighter digital cameras to meet consumer demand," said Frank Bulzomi, senior marketing manager, Magnetic Markets Division, Fuji Photo Film U.S.A., Inc. "Now, digital photographers and other customers who are looking to supplement images with digital video will have added flexibility with the availability of the 256 MB xD-Picture card. Customers can store a greater quantity of images, and at higher resolutions."

The xD-Picture Card also minimizes power consumption to save battery life and provides fast read/write capabilities for smoother digital camera operation. Capacities of 64MB and higher read at a rate of 5MB/sec and write at a speed of 3MB/sec.

SMaL Camera Announces Next Generation 1.3-Megapixel Digital Imaging Kits

Cambridge, Mass., (February 3, 2003) SMaL Camera Technologies, a developer of electronic imaging solutions and the creator of the award-winning 6mm thin Ultra-Pocket VGA digital still camera, announced today the availability of its new Ultra-Pocket 1.3-Megapixel digital imaging kits, enabling consumer electronics manufacturers and specialty retailers to develop the worlds thinnest, lightest and most convenient 1.3-megapixel digital still cameras. The new Ultra-Pocket 1.3-Megapixel kit includes SMaL's proprietary 1.3-megapixel CMOS imager with Autobrite, ASIC controller, lithium-polymer rechargeable battery, taking lens, viewfinder, and complete camera reference design. SMaL also announced today that it delivered a record of more than half a million Ultra-Pocket VGA kits in 2002, enabling several leading brands to successfully release a SMaL-enabled credit card camera in 2002.

The Ultra-Pocket 1.3-Megapixel kit enables the same sleek credit card size of its predecessor, the Ultra-Pocket VGA, with only a slight increase in thickness due to higher resolution optics. It supports added functionality, including a strobe flash and an SD card for expanded memory storage. The kit features SMaL's proprietary low-power technology and lithium-polymer rechargeable battery. This unique combination allows consumers to take hundreds of pictures on a single charge and then recharge the battery automatically each time the camera is connected to a PC or Mac via USB cable. This added factor offers a significant advantage in convenience and cost-savings over existing digital still cameras that require frequent charges or battery replacements. In addition, the 1.3-megapixel resolution results in high quality photo prints as large as 5x7 inches.

The Ultra-Pocket 1.3-Megapixel kit features SMaLs proprietary Autobrite technology, which adapts to bright lighting conditions such as backlighting or glare, solving the dynamic range problem that exists with most other digital cameras. The kit also includes a user-friendly software photo album that consumers can use to manage and enjoy their digital photos. Kit samples are available immediately for qualified OEMs.
