Email Virus Problems EverywhereIf your email Inbox is anything like mine (God help you), then you have probably noticed an abundance of virus-infected emails showing up in the last week or so. The most prevalent ones are VBS/Loveletter@MM and the W32/Klez.E worm and its multitude of variants. I have probably recv'd 300 emails with a body text that says something like, "Here' my new game, I hope you enjoy it." If you use Outlook Express then there is usually a clickable attachment or link in the email - do NOT click on it - in fact don't ever click on any attachment in any email that you get from parties unknown. Maybe the worst thing is that this email worm virus is sending out messages with the From name "spoofed" so you can't even trust email that appears to come from someone that you DO know. And there is also plenty and I do mean plenty of other email virus strains running around, do yourself a favor and run some kind of active virus shield software at all times. I'm not in the anti-virus business so I won't push one brand over the other but I do use McAfee's Active Virus Shield myself and so far it has nabbed all these little critters before they could infect my machine(s).
The bottom line, don't click on email attachments. Always run an active virus shield
program on your computer - if you're not now - go and get one, many of them are free.
Save yourself that incredible headache of having to rebuild your operating system
and all your programs and worse yet, the data, from scratch again, we've all been there
and done that at least once, right?

Epson Unveils $699 Stylus Photo 2200 - First Seven-Color Archival Desktop Photo PrinterLONG BEACH, Calif.--April 25, 2002-- Epson America Inc. is introducing its fastest, sleekest and most impressive desktop photo printer yet -- the EPSON Stylus® Photo 2200. This printer is ideal for anyone who is serious about photography, ranging from amateurs to professional portrait, commercial and fine art photographers. It replaces the award-winning EPSON Stylus Photo 2000P and is loaded with features that will set a new standard for desktop photographic printing. By using Epson's new seven-color UltraChrome inks, the EPSON Stylus Photo 2200 is able to print images at fast speeds with a larger color gamut than the previous generation. These unique pigment-based archival inks reproduce the color range, density and saturation of dye-based inks more than ever before, making this printer the best in its class with its photo and color quality, and superior fade-resistance. "Epson has achieved another significant milestone with the introduction of the EPSON Stylus Photo 2200. With incredible advances in ink and printing technology, this printer provides the ultimate in wide-gamut color, durability and flexibility," said Parker Plaisted, product manager, photo imaging, Epson. "This printer is sure to inspire photographers of all levels, especially with a price that is $200 less than its predecessor." By listening to photographers and what they want in the ultimate photo printer, Epson developed UltraChrome ink, a brand new generation of pigment ink. Building on the technology developed for the EPSON Archival Ink and the EPSON DuraBright Ink, this new UltraChrome Ink retains the advantages of high resistance to water and light, plus the largest color range for pigment inks. The EPSON Stylus Photo 2200 is the first printer to utilize UltraChrome inks, providing a wide color gamut that is now extremely close to the gamut of the popular six-color, dye-based Epson inks with more vibrant and saturated reds, oranges and yellows. This printer also can print stunning black and white photographs with the addition of a new lower density black ink -- Light Black -- which helps produce more neutral grays. The UltraChrome ink has faster printing and drying times enabling the printer to achieve a print speed of four minutes for an 8" x 10" photograph on glossy paper, which is three times faster than the EPSON Stylus Photo 2000P. The EPSON Stylus Photo 2200 offers impressive lightfastness(a) ratings with prints lasting up to 80 years on EPSON Watercolor Paper and black and white prints lasting up to 100 years on various fine art papers. The printer also features new interchangeable black inks to allow users to choose between the printer's standard Photo Black cartridge and an optional Matte Black cartridge. The Photo Black ink supports any type of paper and the Matte Black ink supports matte paper only. The Matte Black also yields higher density and contrast on matte papers and is ideal for matte fine art photography. The EPSON Stylus Photo 2200 has a sleek, modern, attractive case design and black and silver case color, as well as quiet operation. The printer offers a resolution of up to 2880 x 1440 dpi using ultra small four-picoliter droplets, which produces an equivalent dot size to a two-picoliter dye-based droplet. The printer uses Epson's exclusive Micro Piezo ink jet technology for creating incredible detail, beautiful skin tones and an ultra-wide color range that is ideal for photography. Designed to address the needs of a variety of photographers, the EPSON Stylus Photo 2200 has a large printable area up to 13" x 44". Eliminating left and right margins, the printer also features 4", 8.3" and 13" edge-to-edge borderless printing on roll paper. A roll paper holder is included with the printer, in addition to a convenient, built-in automatic cutter that will easily cut borderless prints on roll paper straight out of the printer, virtually turning the printer into a mini-photolab. The cutter is removable from the printer and is safely enclosed in a protective casing. Also included with the printer is a "photo catcher" that attaches to the printer and keeps prints in a neat stack as they are cut from the roll. A variety of glossy and matte papers are compatible with the printer, including EPSON Premium Semigloss Photo Paper, EPSON Premium Luster Photo Paper, EPSON Premium Glossy Photo Paper, EPSON Watercolor Paper and EPSON Enhanced Matte (formerly named Archival Matte) Paper. The newest paper that is available for use with the EPSON Stylus Photo 2200 is Epson's Velvet Fine Art paper. This new paper is a 100 percent cotton, acid free paper and is available in both Letter and Super B (13" x 19") sheets. The Velvet Fine Art paper is a thicker media and can be easily fed through the printer's straight paper path. The paper path supports a variety of media up to 1.3 mm in thickness. The EPSON Stylus Photo 2200 includes EPSON Software Film Factory with PRINT Image Matching support. PRINT Image Matching technology (P.I.M.), which Epson announced in February 2001, ensures that P.I.M.-enabled digital cameras and P.I.M.-enabled printers work perfectly together to create the best possible prints. Compatible with both Windows and Macintosh platforms, the printer features built-in parallel, high speed USB 2.0 and IEEE 1394 FireWire ports.
The EPSON Stylus Photo 2200 will be available in July for an estimated street
price of $699 through mail order, computer superstores, specialty camera and
art stores and at Epson's retail Web site (www.epsonstore.com). The printer is
backed by the one-year EPSON Exchange Warranty and is supported by the
EPSON Connection, a customer support technical assistance line. More
information about Epson and its products is available by calling 1-800-GO
EPSON or visiting the company Web site at www.epson.com.

Canon Posts New D30 FirmwareToday Canon posted EOS D30 firmware v1.0.3.0 which increases the reliability of USB communication when the EOS D30 and a compatible PC or Macintosh computer are connected with the USB interface. The most noticeable improvement occurs during Interval Timer Shooting and Timer Shooting using Remote Capture. The firmware update is for cameras bearing the serial numbers xxx200001 to xxx899999. Cameras already updated with the new firmware will have a note to that fact in the box.
EOS D30 owners using Windows XP or Windows Me are also encouraged to download the new
D30 USB WIA Driver 4.2. This driver software can be downloaded from the Canon web site
in your market, see the links on the

SMaL Camera Technologies Announces a Technology Relationship with Logitech for Ultra-Slim CameraCAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS, USA - April 19, 2002 - SMaL Camera Technologies, Inc. announced today its technology relationship with Logitech for the release of the Logitech® Pocket Digital camera, based on SMaL's Ultra-Pocket digital camera design and technology. SMaL introduced the credit card-sized Ultra-Pocket at the 2001 International Consumer Electronics Show, where it was awarded "Best of Show" for digital imaging. Logitech announced earlier this week its Pocket Digital camera, based on the technology of the Ultra- Pocket. Logitech will market and distribute the Logitech Pocket Digital through major retail outlets and online in US and Europe. The product is scheduled for availability in May 2002 for a US list price of $129.95. As part of the companies' relationship, SMaL supplied Logitech with the reference design and major components, including SMaL's proprietary CMOS image sensor and ASIC. Logitech combined this cutting-edge technology with its signature industrial design and user friendly interface to create a unique camera that is ultra-portable. "As digital photography becomes more mainstream, consumers worldwide are looking for the convenience of an ultra-portable digital camera that is also affordable, easy to use, and high quality," says Romney Williams, Executive Director of Business Development, SMaL Camera Technologies. Maurizio Arienzo, President and CEO, SMaL Camera Technologies, adds, "We partnered with Logitech because of its ability to far exceed consumers' expectations. It is clear why Logitech is a world leader in personal interface products." "SMaL delivers a unique set of technologies that complement our own business focus," said Bruce Friedricks, director of product marketing for Logitech's Video Business Unit. "Logitech believes that the compact digital camera market will see significant growth over the next few years, as consumers perceive the convenience of products that are ready to capture spontaneous moments anytime and anyplace."
The sleek credit card size of Logitech Pocket Digital is made possible by SMaL's ultra-low
power imager chip set, its optics, and its 0.8mm thin, lithium polymer battery. SMaL's
color CMOS image sensor consumes six times less power than typical imagers of comparable
resolution. SMaL's USB-rechargeable battery overcomes the significant complaints about the
cost and inconvenience of frequently replacing batteries used in standard digital cameras.
Not only does the battery automatically recharge itself while images are downloaded to the
PC, but it also allows the user to capture hundreds of images between each recharge. The
chip set also features SMaL's proprietary Autobrite technology, which greatly enhances the
dynamic range and automatically adjusts the exposure for optimum image quality so that
details in both the bright or dim areas are clear.

Check out
Mike Johnston's
Sunday Morning (April 14, 2002) Column over at Luminous Landscape. I'm glad to see that
someone else feels the way I do which is that camera companies are making a mistake by trying to
turn 35mm film cameras into digital cameras. After seeing the awesome quality of the
images that come out of the Canon D60 with its "smaller than 35mm film sensor" -- I don't
think we need larger sensors -- we need newly designed and smaller lenses! Give
Mike's article a good read, it makes excellent sense.

DP Review Posts Minolta S404 Review, Adds Nikon 5000 2nd Opinion and Confirms Price of Nikon D100 at $3350 Canadian
Phil has posted a full
Minolta S404 review and
confirms my feelings that at $499 this is a very good deal for a 4-megapixel
camera with a 4x optical zoom and a compact and aluminum body. One of Phil's
site contributors has added a Nikon
5000 2nd Opinion
and compares it to the Coolpix 950/990/995 line. And of great interest to many is the
pricing of Nikon's new D100 SLR which is now confirmed at $3350 Canadian from one
source. We still do not have an "official" U.S. price, Nikon USA says it will set
the dealer price 30 days before its release which is expected in early summer.
If the Canadian pricing holds that would put it at just under $2000 USD!

Imerge Consulting Announces the Availability of it's New Report, The Worldwide Consumer Digital Camera Forecast and Market Overview, 2001 - 2006"Worldwide Consumer Digital Camera Market Accrues Over $5 Billion in Street Valued Revenue in 2001" According to a new report produced by Imerge Consulting Group LLC, the worldwide consumer digital camera market proved it was no longer a nascent market and accrued over $5 billion in street valued revenue in 2001 with North America accounting for over 43% of worldwide street revenue or over $2 billion. Unit and revenue growth in 2001 was neither as good, nor as bad as some suspected. Worldwide consumer digital cameras experienced 30.7% growth compared to North America at 27.4% and led the IT/consumer products industries in units sold, behind DVD players. "Compared to negative growth rates experienced by the PC industry and flat growth in other sectors such as mobile phones, the consumer digital camera industry reflects one of the healthiest sectors in all of IT", says Ron Tussy, Principal Analyst at Imerge Consulting Group LLC. According to Imerge, North American unit growth in 2001 was nearly half that of 2000 and this was not enough growth to offset declining ASPs, which dropped –14.1% from 2000, forcing street revenue in this sector down to 24.3% growth. With units and ASPs sinking simultaneously, many vendors are currently experiencing inelastic business models and profitable business models in this sector are existent, but scarce. Year 2001 marked the second consecutive year that unit and revenue growth percentage rates declined in the consumer digital camera market due to global economic constraints, the effect of 9/11 and the fact that digital camera penetration is lacking solutions which enable it to fully crack core consumer groups. But a $5 billion industry is one that can be considered to be maturing. (there's more, just follow the link above)

Canon Champions Digital-Age Creativity With Annual Global Creators ContestLAKE SUCCESS, NEW YORK, April 2, 2002 -- The Canon Digital Creators Contest 2002, a competition that encourages artists to explore new directions in digital visual expression in the Internet era, is providing U.S. professional and amateur artists of all ages with the opportunity to showcase their talent and compete for awards that include first place prizes of $20,000 in each of four digital imaging categories. Submissions will be accepted until September 3, 2002. Winners will be announced Friday, December 6, 2002 in Tokyo. Information and entry guidelines are available directly on the Canon Inc. website, or as a link from the Canon U.S.A. site. All submissions in North and South America must be sent to Canon Digital Creators Contest, New York Secretariat, c/o DCA Advertising, 666 Fifth Avenue, 9th Floor, New York, NY 10103. "With the digital age expanding rapidly through the use of Canon's imaging technologies and products, creativity and communication now are expressed so quickly and easily through still images, moving images and Internet communication," said Kinya Uchida, president and CEO, Canon U.S.A., Inc., a subsidiary of Canon Inc. "The Canon Digital Creators Contest grows in popularity every year as digital technology plays a greater role in our lives." Canon launched the contest two years ago. Last year's contest accepted over six thousand submissions from 57 countries. The number of people using digital technology grows daily, and Canon expects the amount of submissions to increase considerably this year and in the years ahead. This year's contest will comprise four division categories. Over 60 prizes totaling more than $115,000 in money and products will be awarded. Digital Photo (Print) Division: Photograph(s) captured with a digital camera, direct-print (unmodified) printouts of digitalized photo(s), or digital modified printouts of digital camera image(s). No theme restrictions, but photo(s) that focus on nature/wildlife or people also will be eligible for a separate award. Digital Graphics /Illustration (Print) Division: Printouts of computer-generated graphics, including illustrations and other designs. Digital Movie Division: Modified and/or edited live-action digital movies created with a digital video camcorder, or computer graphics animated movies. Web Division: Web-based graphics or other images (interactive or non-interactive) viewable over the Internet using Internet Explorer 5.0 or later versions, or Netscape Navigator 4.7 or later versions.
Leading photography, videography, web design and art authorities will
participate in the judging process. They will seek works that redefine the
realm of digital visual expression, challenge the boundaries of
originality and provide expression along with message communication.
