The Kodak DC4800 Zoom is a compact and lightweight 3.3-megapixel digital camera that captures 2160 x 1440-pixel resolution images. It's loaded with features like aperture priority (f/2.8, f/5.6 or f/8), full manual, Programmed AE and long exposure (up to 16 secs) modes.   It's got a 3x (28-84mm 35mm equivalent) optical zoom lens, a fast USB up/download port and adjustable ISO sensitivity of 100, 200 or 400.

Still image capture options include:

  • 3.1 MP (uncompressed TIFF) 2160 x 1440
  • 3.1 MP JPEG 2160 x 1440
  • 3.1 MP (high compression JPEG) 2160 x 1440
  • 2.2 MP JPEG 1800 x 1200
  • 1.6 MP JPEG 1536 x 1024
  • 0.8 MP JPEG 1080 x 720

It also has a standard PC flash sync connector that allows the use of more powerful flash units.   Multi-Pattern, Center-Weighted or Center-Spot metering options. Special filters: B/W yellow filter, B/W red filter, B/W, sepia mode, neutral mode and saturated color mode. User-selectable image sharpness (Sharp, Normal, Soft). And it comes with a rechargeable lithium battery pack with a combination charger and AC power supply.

The DC4800 has a 1.8" color LCD display to frame or review your pictures and navigate the camera's menu system. When used as a viewfinder the LCD shows 95% of the final captured image. There's an optical viewfinder that can be used when taking pictures outdoors or any time you want to save your battery power.

Looking down from the top you can see the large hand grip area on the right side, the data LCD, exposure compensation dial and the mode dial. The popup flash is opened by sliding that little switch on the far left.

The bottom is perfectly flat and the tripod socket is located very near the center of balance. Also on the bottom is the CF card eject lever and the battery compartment door. Because they are all located so close together it will be impossible to change batteries or CF cards with the camera mounted on a tripod.

The I/O ports are on the left side and the CompactFlash card slot is located on the right side (see page 2 for more details).

The mode dial has positions for (counterclockwise) Setup, Review (Playback), Programmed AE and three positions for Aperture-Priority (F2.8, F5.6 and F8). Pressing the center of the mode dial turns the camera on and off.

Note the dedicated dial for exposure compensation control. Across the back edge are buttons for selftimer/burst mode, infinity/macro focus and flash modes. The lever below the flash mode button is the zoom lens control.

Kodak DC4800 Zoom The top LCD data display indicates image quality with one, two or three angled lines. The "M" indicated the camera is in Manual exposure mode and when the shutter is half-pressed the shutter speed (1/125) is displayed rather than the number of shots remaining.

"ISO" appears when the user has selected a value other than the default of ISO 100. "WB" (white balance) means the user has selected a value other than automatic. The flash modes, selftimer, infinity and macro focus modes all have dedicated icons.

The optical viewfinder shows ~95% of the captured frame (less at full telephoto) and has a diopter adjustment control on the side. The red and green LEDs indicate autofocus and flash status.
