This is a simple and unscientific experiment to see what the various cameras do in an available light situation. All were set at their default ISO and sharpness settings (except as noted below for the Olympus C-2500L) and if available I did use manual white balancing. Lighting was from four 4-ft, overhead 5500K "daylight" flourescent bulbs. This is how I normally shoot my "product" shots for my user reviews and I think you'll see why I prefer to do it with a 1.5MPixel Canon Pro 70 camera even though its white balance is not as "on the money" as some of the others, its image quality is consistently good under these conditions (IMHO). The results speak for themselves, all images are direct from the camera, EXIF header info is displayed. People have been complaining about the new 2.1, 2.3 and 2.5MPixel cameras having a "noise" problem in shadow areas or in low-light conditions. The Canon Pro 70 and the Sony D700 are 1.5MPixel cameras, the rest in this test are 2.1, 2.3 and 2.5MPixel. The Olympus C-2500L took the worst picture (in normal mode), at the request of Mike Chaney I also shot it with the C-2500L set to "soft" and the difference is like night and day! The Canon Pro 70, Sony D700 and the Canon S10 tied for the best - in my opinion, of course. Bear in mind that this was a very unscientific test, using only one set of parameters and is by no means "conclusive" when it comes to one camera being better than the others. |
