Tamron's new SP 150-600MM F/5-6.3 Di VC USD lens is a large, solidly built zoom lens for Canon, Nikon and Sony mount systems. This large lens has been built to get you closer to your subject than your feet or surroundings will allow. Both focus and zoom rings turn smoothly, but not with too much ease, so you can be comfortable holding and aiming the lens without rotating the ring accidentally. AF is achieved using the Ultrasonic Silent Drive, providing you with fast, quiet and accurate autofocus.
At 10.1-inches long at its most compact, this large lens expands to much larger when using the telephoto end of the zoom. At just over 4 pounds, it is also quite heavy. While this does not sound like it is heavy, attaching it to your camera body and trying to hold it steady while shooting will change your mind in a hurry.
The lens offers controls for the AF distance, AF/MF control and VC (vibration correction) on and off control. With a little practice, all of this extra control can be utilized in the field without ever having to look at the lens. Just flipping these switches with your thumb is more than manageable.
Here is a close-up of the much smaller focus ring on the camera. Both rings feature this ribbed rubber grip making them very easy to find and control. At the top right you will also see the locking switch. This locks the lens at 150mm for safe and compact (as much as possible) travel.
Our sample lens shows the 150-600mm lens with Canon's metal EF lens mount. This allows you to use the lens with any other Canon camera that accepts EF or EF-S lenses. The lens is also available for Nikon and Sony cameras.
Tamron's VC optical image stabilization system has been added to the large lens to assist with keeping it steady in low-light and handheld shooting situations. Even in bright situations, shooting handheld at the full 600mm can be difficult. Tamron claims that this advanced system can compensate for up to 4 stops of correction.
If you are looking for a set of filters for this lens, you will need to find a ø95 set. A little larger than most lenses, these filters were made for much larger lenses than most people usually carry in their bags.
The lens also comes equipped with a large lens hood, lens cap and tripod mount attachment. The tripod mount does add a little extra weight to the camera, but it is specifically designed to help balance the lens when a camera is attached and allows for easy operation with both a tripod or monopod.
