Intelligent Auto is the NEX-6's automatic shooting mode. The camera analyzes and sets all of the camera settings for you. This leaves you to just point-n-shoot, making the camera easy enough for anyone in the house or family to operate.

Superior Auto is a more advanced automatic shooting mode that uses some the NEX-6's more powerful features. Features like Auto HDR are used here when the camera determines that they are necessary.

Program mode is another automatic shooting mode, but it gives the user control over a wide variety of options that give you some creative control. There are several different screens full of information that are available in all of the shooting modes that can be selected by pressing the DISP. button. Sets of both still and video settings are available as well as an electronic level and settings only screen.

Manual mode gives the photographer complete control over the camera. The 4-way control dial and command dial allow for easy and complete control while shooting. The camera can even be set to manual focus mode which allows any of the Sony E-mount lenses to be manually focused, even the new power zoom lens. For those not quite ready for full manual, the NEX-6 also offers Aperture priority and Shutter Speed priority modes.

The NEX-6 still offers various Scene Modes. These allow you to tell the camera the type of scene you are trying to capture, while still being fully automatic. When you bring up a mode onscreen, you'll get a brief description of its intended use. The available modes are: Portrait, Landscape, Macro, Sports Action, Sunset, Night Portrait, Night Scene, Hand-held Twilight, Anti Motion Blur
