Record Screens & Menus

By

Please excuse the poor quality of these screen captures. The Galaxy S4 Zoom camera kit does not include an AV output cable, therefore we had to photograph the display screen.

Record - auto mode.jpg
Despite the cell phone capabilities and touchscreen enabled menu structure, the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom is a point-n-shoot camera at its core. The very basic Auto mode shooting screen illustrates the easy-to-use shooting options with this camera.

Most of the camera's operational controls are on the right side of the screen, while the shooting controls are on the left. Just touch any of the buttons or icons listed below to activate them using the touchscreen.

The Auto icon in the upper right corner indicates the current shooting mode, and this is the only icon on the screen that cannot be touched to activate it. The button containing the camera icon allows you to record a photo by touching this button, rather than using the shutter button on the top panel of the camera. The Mode button allows you to pick the shooting mode to use. The movie camera icon button near the lower right corner of the screen allows you to start a video recording.

On the left side of the screen, the camera icon with two arrows in the upper left corner allows you to switch between the main camera and the smaller resolution cell phone camera. The plus and minus icon buttons allow you to expand and retract the zoom lens. In the lower left corner is a thumbnail image of the last photo that was shot, and you can open Playback mode by touching this image.

Touch the right-pointing chevron near the upper left corner to open some shooting controls, which we'll discuss later.

Record - special effects GIF.gif
Touch the upward-pointing chevron along the bottom of the screen to see the special effect options, which include:

  • No Effect
  • Vignette
  • Grayscale
  • Sepia
  • Vintage
  • Faded Colors
  • Turquoise
  • Tint
  • Cartoon
  • Moody
  • Rugged
  • Oil Pastel
  • Fisheye

Record - zoom GIF.gif
As you advance the zoom lens, either through pressing the plus and minus icons on the left side of the screen or by twisting the zoom ring around the lens, you'll see the current optical zoom magnification displayed on the screen for a second.

Record - mode dial.jpg
Touching the Mode button on the right side of the screen brings four buttons to the screen. You can touch any of the buttons to change the shooting mode. The options include:

  • Auto (A)
  • Smart - Scene modes
  • Expert - Program (P), Manual (M), Color Wizard (C)
  • My Mode - Star icon
Through the My Mode button, you can store up to five shooting modes that you use most often. You can select from any of the scene modes used on the camera, as well as the Program, Manual, and Color Wizard modes.

Record - expert mode P GIF.gif
When you touch the P button to enter Program mode, you'll see the screen above. You can switch shooting modes by dragging your finger across the touchscreen on the inner ring (on the far right), almost as if you're spinning an actual ring.

Using the Program mode, spin the middle ring to make changes to the various advanced settings that are available in this mode. With a setting selected you then can spin the outer ring (on the far left) to change the options within that setting. The options in the middle ring in Program mode are:

  • EV - Between -2 and +2 in 1/3 increments
  • ISO - Auto, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200
  • White Balance - Auto, Daylight, Cloudy, Fluorescent-H, Fluorescent-L, Tungsten, Kelvin (3,500 to 10,000)
  • Metering - Multiple, Spot, Center-Weighted
  • Drive Mode - Single, Continuous, AE Bracket
If you're confused about anything you're seeing on the screen, a popup window will provide a brief explanation of the icons in the middle ring, but there are no explanations of the icons in the outer ring.

Record - info GIF.gif
There's also an I button in the lower left corner that you can touch to find additional information about the mode and the functions, as shown here.

Record - program mode.jpg
When shooting in Program mode, you'll see the same icons on the screen that you saw in Auto mode, other than the mode indication icon in the upper right corner, a gear icon in the upper left corner, and a set of icons across the top of the screen.

The icons across the top of the screen (from left to right) indicate the shutter speed, aperture, EV, and ISO. If the icons are white in color, you can touch those icons to make changes to the setting. If the icons are in gray, you cannot change them by touching them.

The gear icon opens a set of on-screen menus for controlling the camera and the settings, as we'll discuss later.

Record - expert mode M.jpg
After pressing the Mode button you can change to Manual shooting mode touching the M button. As described earlier you'll see three rings on the screen, and you can drag your finger across the touchscreen to spin the rings. The options in the middle ring in Manual mode are:

  • Shutter Speed - Between 1 second and 1/2000th of a second
  • Aperture - F3.1, F8.8 at wide angle (these aperture numbers change depending on the optical zoom setting)
  • ISO - Auto, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200
  • White Balance - Auto, Daylight, Cloudy, Fluorescent-H, Fluorescent-L, Tungsten, Kelvin (3,500 to 10,000)
  • Metering - Multiple, Spot, Center-Weighted
  • Drive Mode - Single, Continuous, AE Bracket

Record - manual mode.jpg
Other than the Manual mode icon in the upper right corner, the icons on the Manual shooting screen are identical to those on the Program shooting screen that was discussed earlier.

Record - expert mode C GIF.gif
Touch the C button to enter the Color Wizard mode. The options in the middle ring in Color Wizard mode are:

  • EV - Between -2 and +2 in 1/3 increments
  • Color - None or 21 different color tints
  • Saturation - +2, +1, 0, -1, -2
  • Sharpness - +2, +1, 0, -1, -2
  • Contrast - +2, +1, 0, -1, -2

Record - scene mode GIF.gif
When you want to use scene modes with the Samsung Galaxy S4 Zoom, you'll want to pick Smart mode from the virtual mode dial. When the icons for each scene mode are displayed on the right side of the screen, you can drag your fingers across the touchscreen to scroll through the different icons. As you scroll through the icons, you'll see an explanation of each Smart mode on the left side.

You also can touch the 2x2 box icon in the lower right corner to show all of the Smart mode icons on the screen at one time. Touch it again to return to the scroll mode. The 25 Smart mode options are:

  • Smart Mode Suggest
  • Beauty Face
  • Best Photo
  • Continuous Shot
  • Best Face
  • Kids Shot
  • Landscape
  • Dawn
  • Snow
  • Macro

To open the Galaxy S4 Zoom's Home screen from Camera mode, just press the oval-shaped button on the edge of the back of the camera near your right hand. If you own a smartphone that runs Android, you're going to recognize the S4 Zoom's Home screen.

On the default Home screen, you'll see the following icons, starting in the lower left and moving first to the right and then upward:

  • Contacts
  • E-mail
  • Calendar
  • Gallery - Provides access to stored photos
  • Phone
  • Messaging
  • Browser
  • Camera - Activates the main 16M camera

If you drag your finger across the main Home screen toward the left, you can open the Camera Studio window pictured above. You can open the My Mode camera settings that we discussed earlier, as well as the Paper Artist function, through which you can add a variety of special effects to photos you've already shot.

Record - movie GIF.gif
From the main shooting screen, press the movie camera button to begin recording a movie.

You'll see very little information about the movie shooting settings on the video recording screen with the Galaxy S4 Zoom camera. At the upper left corner you'll see the amount of time the recording has been occurring, as well as the maximum recording time available. Press the Stop (square) icon in the lower right corner to stop the recording. Press the Pause button to momentarily stop the recording with the option of continuing the same recording later.

The full 10x optical zoom is available when recording a video, either by pressing the plus and minus zoom buttons on the left side of the screen or by twisting the zoom ring. Press the camera button on the video recording screen to record a still image while recording a video. You can record up to six still images per video stream.
