Record Screens & Menus

By

Please excuse the poor quality of these screen captures. The Galaxy Camera kit does not include an AV output cable, therefore we had to photograph the display screen.

Samsung has chosen to keep the Galaxy Camera's touchscreen LCD pretty clean and free of icons and data in Auto mode, which makes this model easy to use.

Along the right side from top to bottom, you'll see the Auto mode icon and battery charge, the camera button to record photos by touching the screen, the virtual mode dial, and the movie button to start and stop video recording.

In the upper left corner is the Home icon, which sends you to the main Galaxy Camera screen, as well as a right-pointing chevron to open a popup menu.

In the lower left corner you'll see the most recent photo you've shot. There's also an upward-pointing chevron along the bottom of the screen to give you access to the special effects menus.

When you press the shutter button halfway to pre-focus on the subject, the focus box will turn green to indicate that the camera has achieved a sharp focus. (It will turn red if the focus is not sharp.) All of the icons will disappear from the screen, too.

Samsung is using the name Smart mode with the Galaxy Camera to refer to the scene modes. You can enter Smart mode using the virtual mode dial.

As you scroll through the scene modes on the right side of the screen, using your finger in a sweeping motion on the touchscreen, you'll see an explanation of each scene mode on the left side. The Smart mode options are:

  • Beauty Face
  • Best Photo
  • Continuous Shot
  • Best Face
  • Landscape
  • Macro
  • Action Freeze
  • Rich Tone
  • Panorama
  • Waterfall
  • Silhouette
  • Sunset
  • Night
  • Fireworks
  • Light Trace

When you press the Expert icon from the virtual mode dial, you can pick from five different options:

  • Program Auto (P)
  • Aperture Priority (A)
  • Speed Priority (S)
  • Camcorder
  • Manual (M)
The Galaxy Camera displays a few additional icons on the screen when you're shooting in an Expert mode versus Auto mode. You'll see the ISO setting, EV, aperture, and shutter speed across the top of the screen. You'll also see a settings button in the upper left corner, signified with a gear icon, .

As you touch the virtual mode dial to select a mode, you will have access to a variety of manual settings. Samsung has created virtual dials for each manual setting, allowing you to trace your fingertip over each dial to spin it to a new setting. Some of the manual settings won't be available in certain mode options. For example, in Program mode you can only set the ISO and EV.

As you select a dial, you'll see an explanation appear on the screen. The manual settings that are available are:

  • ISO - Auto, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600, 3200
  • EV - +2.0, +1.7, +1.3, +1.0, +0.7, +0.3, 0, -0.3, -0.7, -1.0, -1.3, -1.7, -2.0

Record GIF - menu home.gif
You can open the Home screen for the Galaxy Camera by touching the home icon in any shooting mode. The Home screen looks a lot like a smartphone screen, which makes sense because the Galaxy Camera runs the Android operating system. But with the Galaxy Camera, most of the icons on the Home screen lead to various settings to control the camera..

  • Paper Artist - Allows you to shoot photos and add multiple special effects (Watersketch, Detail, Pen & Pencil, Sticker Album, For Real, Burn, Cookie, Epic, Markerpen, Savina, Candyfloss, Munch, Newsprint, Oil Painting, Dreamy, Comic Book, Pastel Sketch, Luce, Noir Note, Colarello, Cadrega, Vinyl, Wriggles, Cashmere, Stucchevcie, Old Poster, Scrunch, Gino, Scratchcard, Mosaic, Mineral, Jaysee, Woody, Felt Pen) or by drawing lines and adding colors manually

The Camera icon in the lower left corner allows you to leave the Home screen and begin shooting photos, while the Apps icon in the lower right corner leads to the Apps screen, where you'll store your smartphone-like apps. There are tabs along the top of the camera for Apps, Widgets, and for additional downloads. Some apps and widgets are preloaded on the Galaxy Camera. You can download and store additional apps on the camera, too. Scroll to the right and left on these screens to see additional screens in the Apps and Widgets sections.

There are also additional screens available from the Home screen. Slide your finger on the screen toward the right and you can see the screens on the left, such as those that allow you to set up social networking accounts and other ways to share your photos.

Finally from the Home screen, you also can do a Google search through your Wi-Fi or 4G connection (If you have the 4G capable model, Samsung does offer a Wi-Fi only version).

Record GIF - WiFi connect.jpg
When you have the Galaxy Camera's Wi-Fi enabled, you'll see a message each time you power up the camera about which network to which the camera is connected. Remember that if the camera is connected to a Wi-Fi network, the battery will drain much more quickly.

Record GIF - movie.jpg
When you press the movie record button from any shooting mode, you'll immediately begin recording video. The amount of time the recording has been occurring will be in the upper left corner along with a red REC icon. You can pause and stop the recording using the touch-enabled buttons on the right side of the screen. If you press the camera icon button while recording a video, the Galaxy Camera will record a photo while continuing to record video.
