Attaching to the GXR's body are two separate camera units, both including their own unique lens, imaging sensor and imaging processor that are optimized for the specific lenses. On the right you can see the S10 camera unit with a 24-72mm zoom lens, 10-Megapixel CCD imaging sensor and Smooth Imaging Engine 4. To the right is the A12 camera unit with a fixed 50mm lens, 12.3-Megapixel CMOS imaging sensor and the GR Engine III.

        Macro - 7cm to Infinity

S10  Normal - 30cm to Infinity
        Macro - 1cm to Infinity (W)
                    4cm to Infinity (T)





ricoh_gxr_slot3.jpgThe different camera units attach to the body by a specifically designed rail and slide mechanism. This allows the units to slide easily and connect firmly to the body every time. On the right side of the handle is the switch that releases the camera units, allowing them to slide off just as easily as they went on.






ricoh_gxr_flash.jpgRicoh's built-in, pop-up flash is built into the body of the camera and available with either of the camera units that are attached. It can be used in Auto, Red-eye, Slow sync., Forced On, Forced Off and manual modes. The manual modes can be set within the camera's menu system with amounts of FULL, 1/1.4, 1/2, 1/2.8, 1/4, 1/5.6, 1/8, 1/11, 1/16, 1/22, 1/32, 1/64. The flash distances vary depending on the camera unit attached.

A12 Range - Approx. 20 cm - 3.0 m (ISO auto)
S10 Range - Approx. 20 cm - 4.5 m (wide-angle)
                   Approx. 15 cm -2.7 m (telephoto)






ricoh_gxr_controls_top.jpgThe controls on top of body are very simple, including the ON/OFF switch and Shutter Release on the left side. At the top is the UP/DOWN dial and to the far right is the Mode selection dial. Right above the Mode dial is a button that locks the dial into place, which prevents the camera mode from being changed unless you want it to.





ricoh_gxr_back.jpgThe High Quality 920,000 dot, 3-inch LCD on back of the body is normally only found on new dSLR model cameras. It does an excellent job of reproducing high-quality images with the full sRGB color range.

On the back of the camera, there are two sets of buttons. To the top you can see the DIRECT button, which brings up a quick menu, that allows for quick changes to the commonly used shooting settings. Next is the flash open button and finally the button to switch between the LCD and the optional EVF.

To the right are the main controls on the back: Top left is the ADJ lever, Top right is the zoom control lever. Under these are the Playback button, macro button, self-timer and DISP buttons. Finally in the middle is the 8-way controller, that not only allows for lateral movement but also diagonal. These directions also act as shortcuts for Manual Flash Amount, Manual Focus Adjustment and Exposure Compensation. Inside is the Menu/OK button.

On the right side of the camera are the Input/Output ports. On top is an HDMI output for viewing your images and movies on a HDTV. For use with any other TV, the next port handles a standard set of A/V cables. Finally at the bottom is a USB 2.0 connector for transferring images to the computer.

The Ricoh GXR uses SD and SDHC memory cards to compliment the 86MB of internal memory for storing your images and videos. The GXR is shown here with a speedy SanDisk Ultra II, 15MB/s, 4GB SDHC card.

ricoh_gxr_battery.jpgPowering the GXR is a 3.6V, 1700mAh, Li-Ion rechargeable powerhouse of a battery. It allows for the GXR to capture up to 320 images with the A12 camera unit or 410 images with the S10 unit based on CIPA standards.

Here is the optional EVF, which sits directly on the shoe on top of the camera, while plugging into the back at the same time. With the EVF you are able to shoot without the LCD, which is easier to see outside in bright light as well as better on battery life.

For shooting situations where the pop-up flash is just not going to be enough or a more specific lighting setup is needed, Ricoh also sells the GF-1 TTL external flash unit. Not only does it supply a larger flash range, but has a slave feature that allows you to use it in conjunction with the pop-up or other lighting setups.
